The plane was delayed!!!
Hi, I’m Adam DeSerio. It was great getting to meet the other kids at LAX in an awesome Private lounge! We had free food, and received a gift bag containing Aussie leather hats, and an Australian dictionary. Everything was going great till one of the hosts told us that our plane had been delayed till 2:30 a.m., and originally we were going to leave at 11:20 p.m. Most of us slept right there in the airport. When we finally got on the plane at 1:30 we were notified that we ONLY had 13 hours till we would land in Brisbane! It is really funny because the leather hats were made in Australia, were shipped to Los Angeles, then were taken back Down Under, and will eventually end up back in Los Angeles! Ha, ha–it’s great!
The flight “Down Under”
Hi, I’m Casey Densmore. For me the trip started when the staff, my mom and I arrived in LAX after a nice flight from Virginia. I enjoyed meeting the people who I only knew through e-mail. We talked with each other, and the Tourism Australia group gave us dictionaries with terms and Australian hats! We had a long delay in the airport, and most of us settled in and slept. We then ended up on another plane bound for Australia. We immediately boarded another plane to Cairnes, where we saw amazing views of the Great Barrier Reef. We boarded a bus and went to Port Douglas and the hotel, where we swam and enjoyed a relaxing afternoon.

Hi, I’m Grace Hubbard. “A slight aeroplane delay” was what the flight staff told us–which, simply put, meant four hours in a cold, crowded part of California’s airport in Los Angeles, trying to keep occupied. So, in the wee hours of the morning (depending on how big the time difference was in everyone’s home states), this large amount of time was spent getting to know each other in many unusual ways- such as iPod-sharing, exciting “Go Fish” card games, Australian scrapbooking tips, etc. However, some people tried to catch up on their sleep–and late night construction woke them up. But not my mother! She chose early on to take advantage of an open space on the floor, curled up with her head on her laptop and her hat resting on her face. When we finally got onto the airplane, she even slept some more! The flight was uneventful, and very exciting for those people (ahem, Adam!) who liked to take advantage of the “free food.” After that, we scurried onto another two-hour flight to Cairns, and then from there, a bus ride to our hotel and resort. We were all so amazed by the things we saw on that bus ride–from the smattering of hills surrounding us to the funky way people drove on the other side of the road. (Let me tell you, that is REALLY hard to get used to!) We even saw a McDonald’s on the side of the road! But what really amazed us were the breathtaking beaches we passed: their waves rolling with salt, the hills silhouetted behind them. Then, onto the resort and swimming for all! Afterward we had a wonderful dinner at Zinc, and with our stomachs stuffed, we all trooped back onto a bus and stumbled into our beds (As we were all clearly still suffering from jet lag!) That’s when we finally realized that this was no longer a dream, this WAS actually happening to us…and we were miles away in beautiful Australia. And we were about to have the adventure of a lifetime!
