I can’t believe the deadline is literally right there I can just merely see it. If I don’t win I will be kinda diseppointed because I worked incredably hard on my essay and I want this more than anything in the whole wide world! If I had the chance of getting new cat and phone or going on this trip I would most defiantly pick the trip to Peru! Well that’s about it for now!

Well good luck anyway. Oh ya, this contest has made me decide what I want to be when i grow up, a travel journalist! How cool right travel around the world and write for a magazine like National Geographic. that’s my dream job and I’m stickin’ with it. Also I eat, live, and breathe the Hands-On Explorer Challenge. I just can’t stop thinking about it. I probably annoyed everyone who I’ve told this contest to, but hey, I somethin’ I love. Well best of luck to everyone who enters! Have confidence! obviously you people are some of the few to take the time, (and energy), to visit this website, and that shows that you probably want this more than the people that didn’t! Remember,”In confidence, there is success”. I am positive that we will meet each other in Peru!

    February 5, 2009, 7:41 pm

I know right trikid, wait by the phone and just hope it’s NG Team! But sadly that’s about 2 WHOLE MONTHS AWAY!!!!! Any who tigergirl13 did you find out what you want to be when you grow-up from this contest or have you always known that you wanted to own a rehabilitation center.? Like Ibenez Icy said think the people who really want to win are the people who take time to go to this website and blog with other people like us. So everyone fyi DONT STOP BLOGGING!!!! How cool would it be if at least three of us won? We could tell ev’ryone else who won we were blogging way before we knew we had won. But anyway I’m soooooo happy that the deadline is out of the way and we can start focusing on when we find out.
Well it was nice hearing from some other people. Hope to hear from you guys soon!

    Hi everyone!
I’ve been sooooooo busy I haven’t had enough time to blog and meet other cool explorers! It’s so awesome being able to talk to other people who are really passionate about exploring. I had to have my parents drive me 7 hours to get to my destination for my picture. But at least we got to stay over night. It was a fun little experience and I got to explore so more cool things too. I I’m wishing everyone the best of luck on this contest! I really hope we all win!!!!!

P.S. I’ve said this before but I want to say this again. I have had this big feeling that all or most of us bloggers will win the contest. I am just hoping for the best though!

OMG!!!!!! I can’t believe I actually made it on my laptop before my bus comes at 7:00am this is definatly a first. Any who we are now offically past the deadline mark so now no one else can enter. Now all we have to be patient for about oh I don’t now TWO MONTHS!!!! But in the end if I win or any of us win it will be all worth it right?! Well I better hurry up typing so I don’t miss my bus. My english teacher is always saying to me that I have a gift for writing and I just have to find somewhere good to use it. So I wrote this essay and I think (and hope) my chances are really high for a shot at one of those spots of the fifteen kids. Well bye for now!!!!

Peru looks like I really cool place to go. I’ve been looking at a lot of websites of it… he he, just in case.

OH MY GOODNESS! the deadline is here!! (by the way this is Harleycat…i don’t know why my name’s still not showing up!) I am really nervous, I counted up all the drafts of the essay I made and I made 7 (really different from each other, not little changes) drafts! I’m scared now because I just re-read all of them and I like my 6th one WAYYY better than the one I sent in, now that I look at it without the pressure, oh well, what can you do now right? If anyone else is like me and made a mistake like that, don’t waste time stressing yourself out about things you can’t change, use that time to explore!!!! Woohoo! I want to win this trip SOOOO badly! Its only two months away until we find out who won! Don’t worry, those 2 months will fly by if we stay busy! (just like you said trikid!) well i hope to someday meet you guys! GO NG KIDS!

Its cool to see other people freaking out about this just like me! Did anyone enter last year? I didn’t, but I did the year before that. He. He. I didn’t win. *surprise surprise* But I worked a lot harder on this essay.
Also, next year will be my last chance to enter!!!!I don’t have many more chances like this, EVER. Well if I don’t win this year, I will definitley look forward to trying again next year.
I’m so nervous….. I’m glad I can talk about it here cause… um no one else really cares….!

Dear fellow Geeks, we have now made contact, we are not alone! Our plan to take over Peru has now been set in motion! Who will be the chosen few?…….

No,seriously though, I can’t wait until they release the results. It’s nice to know that there are fellow explorers out there, hopefully I will get to meet you. Maybe the next trip will be to Africa or somewhere in the Pacific islands. I want to go to Peru to explore the Amazon and the rainforest, biology is soo cool.
ONLY 59 days, or 1418 hours or ONLY 5097600 seconds untill they make their decision, TWITCH, TWITCH.

How curious luckstomper My english teacher said the same thing! However, I still can’t help but worry, especially since this is my first, (and last, (age rule!) time sending in an essay. In fact, my teacher was the one who introduced me to the NG contest.
It would be absolutely wesome to win this trip, and I can not imagine a better place to win a trip to! But, taking a guess, I would say the next trip will probably be in Europe, or perhaps soutHern Asia… (btw Check out the book, “Digging for the Truth by Josh Bernstein” if your interested)
And, Trikid, my favorite part would probably be Machu Piccu, or just the “chance” to go to a different continent… i just can’t wait to find out the winners!

    February 7, 2009, 8:04 am

Well looks like someone is actually counting down every day, hour, and seconds. I mean I like to count down things but hours and seconds, really? Any who this wait is really, really, REALLY nerve wracking. For me at least i don’t know about anyone else. But I keep thinking ohhhhhh nooooooo is my essay good enough, so I’ll go back and look at it and then I’ll calm down about it. then I will keep asking my “magic” 8 ball “will I win the trip to Peru?” so it will say yes one time then it will say no then yes. SO eventually i stopped cause I didn’t want to jinx myself! So now everyday I eat sleep and breathe this contest I can’t stop thinking of it. But after I said all this I don’t want you to get an impression on me that’s not true, I’m not like this in real life i just act this way when a big contest is about to tell who won in about 2 months. Well that’s all I have to say for now.

(This is Harleycat…why isn’t my name coming up??) Anyway, I would LOVE to see a blue headed parrot or maybe even a Macaw! That would be SO cool! I love birds sooooo much! I love all animals, I don’t mean to pick favorites, I’m just drawn to them! I’ve always wanted to explore a rainforest! I was hiking today (brrr) and I couldn’t help thinking that in a couple months maybe I could hike through a RAINFOREST in PERU!!! That would be UNBELIEVABLE! On the subject of what we want to be when we grow up, I want to be an ornithologist, or a photojournalist. I really want to travel the whole world, every continent (Maybe even every country!) and see all the different cultures.

    Hi everyone!
It’s so awesome how every so often, new bloggers passionate about exploring and nature join the ‘club’! It’s been really awesome being able to talk to everyone and exchange experiences working on this contest. I really hope all or at least most of us win! As for wondering where the next trip will be I’m just guessing. Since Nat Geo has already been to the Galapagos Islands (Pacific Ocean), South Africa (Africa), Australia (Australia/Oceania), and are now going to Peru (South America), I think Nat Geo will go to some place in the Atlantic Ocean, Asia, or Europe. Any place would be really cool though. All of us want this trip soooooo bad. It would be just so amazing being able to win this contest! Every place that Nat Geo goes to is full of nature, wildlife, breathtaking sites, rich culture and history, and so much more! I really want this trip more than a trip to Disney World, a new phone, a new computer, and a $10, 000 shopping spree combined. Yeah, those things may equal up to the whole Peru trip cost, but by winning this contest you get a camera, photography tips, a fun time with other passionate explorers, and a time to learn about a place from professional Nat Geo people! It would just really be a trip of a lifetime! I really hope I and many other bloggers win this trip! Good luck, and be prepared for the phone interview with Nat Geo judges!

I’ve just realized, if you win, you’ll get a passport! I don’t know why, but I think it will be insanely cool to get a passport, and you get to fill it up with cool stamps!

I thought Peru was a “under the radar” country with nothing much worth seeing there except for the Nazca lines and of course Machu Picchu. But now I’ve found new and bold places I would like to there like for instance Puerto Maldonado (got that from the “Our Destinations” page on this blog), also Lima also it’s very crowded but oh well. And much more like the valley below Machu Picchu except I can’t think of it at the moment, but oh well, its in the “Our Destinations” page. Well, that’s all for now!! can’t wait for the winners to be announced!!!!!! PEACE OUT MY PEEPS!!!!

hey everyone! the best way I make the time fly by fast is being busy and keeping my mind occupied. I read lots of books, write letters to friends to occupy more time than just emailing, try to earn extra credit, and enter school supported contests (speech contests, math contests, academic decathlon, science fairs). The more you have on your mind, the faster time seems to fly by. My favorite school sponsored contests are speech contests. Usually there are different categories that you compete in. Sometimes you have to memorize something you pick, write and then memorize something, or say the speech on the spot at the contest (if you this, practice to take up time!). Of course you can do anything you want that makes time go by faster for YOU. Good luck!

Shastasteph is definately right! The more you have on your mind the faster it goes by! It makes the thing your being excited about seem more realistic because it’s in your near future!!

Peru falls in everywhere for me. I basically EAT, BREATHE, AND SLEEP Peru. Peru over here over there basically everywhere really it just doesn’t wanna leave my mind. I mean when I’m trying to learn in school, Peru, Peru just pops into my head. And when I’m trying to think of a topic for something guess what, PERU PERU PERU. I really
want this trip more than anything in the world!!!! For instance I would much rather wanna win this contest than go to Disney, get an itouch/iphone, get 500 dollars, a gold something, and so on. Anywhothe reason why I wrote in this section is beacuse I didn’t want it to die out. Also over this past week I have got to finally go outside and explore because it wasn’t freazing out. And for all the peeps who live in my area know about the big ICE STORM that happened in December. Well that destroyed and killed many of the trees around my house. So I went out and broke all the ice off of a good portion of the trees that were hurt and pushed them back up to the way they were supposed to be. And I think that was a pretty good deed done by me for nature. Well I think I should wrap this up now. So hope to hear from someone soon in this blog so we can keep it alive!

Good for you luckstomper for saving our trees! I and probably everyone else would have done the same thing. I want this trip soooooo bad, and I want it more than ANYTHING almost (i wouldn’t want if more than maybe winning next years, or giving up my family, and other important things), but otherwise I REALLY WANT THIS! I would give up a trip to Disneyworld, $10,000, a brand new cool phone, a laptop, a horse (which is my fav animal), and lots more combined just to win this trip. I want it sooooo bad. I really hope the judges at least call me, and really hope if they call me, they pick me. I REALLY REALLY REALLY want this sooooooooooooooooooo bad! JuJu I wouldn’t say lucky for the ice storm we had up here. The reason I say that is because I had no power for 6 WHOLE DAYS!!! It was absolutely freezing with no heat, we couldn’t cook on the stove, turn on the lights (used up a lot of candles), and other things. Now would you say lucky?????

For whoever wanted to know, this is the 4th year of HOEC. The first year they went to the Galapagos Islands. I entered, but lost. Then they went to South Africa, then Australia, and now Peru. I don’t think 2010 will be in Europe. HOEC has shown a pattern for choosing more exotic places. Well not really exotic, but just different. One’s you wouldn’t think of traveling to otherwise, you know what I mean?? I hope 2010 will be someplace like Thailand, Indonesia, India, or Cambodia. All of those places have a very rich history and culture. They fit the bill. Sadly, I am 14 right now, and I will not be allowed to enter next year, so I better win this year!!

your right softballstar, i think they will pick a more, exotic, place (is that the right word?) Maybe one in Central America, or maybe even a trip in one of the mountain ranges!

my favorite season here in N.H. is Fall, because it is warm enough to not wear a coat, just short sleeves (60 to 70 degrees) and the colors of everything are sooooooooo beautiful!

I love rain too! I love the smell! Did you know that it is not the rain that smells? It is the plants releasing some sort of chemical! isn’t that cool????

I am 14 too and won’t be able to enter next year =(

    Thanks for reading this!

I really hope I and many more of us bloggers win this contest! Maybe next year they’ll go to some place like Mongolia, or the Netherlands, or France! I heard some really rural areas in France have all these cool medieval castles! I’ve been studying them in S.S. They probably will go to some place really cool next year, but I really want to win this year’s to Peru! If not Peru (I REALLY HOPE I DO WIN PERU), hopefully next year’s. If not next year’s, than next, next year’s (if I’m still within the limit)! I really want to win Peru and get to meet you other explorers on the trip! Please let me and the others win! I want this Peru trip sooooooo bad!!!!!and so do the other bloggers!

Maybe next year NG will go to Kazakhstan, Turkey, India, China, Sri Lanka, or Madagascar. Whatever place NG picks will be ssooooooooo awesome. Did you know Madagascar is the ONLY country where many animals such as lemurs are native too and live wildly? I want to see lemurs in the wild! They look sooo cute! I really want to win Peru! I really want to win THIS YEAR! If I don’t win this year (but I hope I do win this year’s HOEC trip to Peru) I hope I win an HOEC trip before I’m too old. Good luck everyone! I hope I and you win the Peru trip!

Maybe next year they will go some place like Sri Lanka or China along the great wall. I live in Kansas and in the spring/summer, every time after we bail our alfalfa, it smells. I say it smells because I think it does, but my sister and classmates think it smells great. I think it smells like a bunch of fresh cut grass with a touch of honey. Do you bloggers have any special place you like to go to explore/think/be yourself? Good luck to all and it is unfortunate that we all can’t win because we all worked really hard.

I am so excited. I’m 13, and i still have one more chance to go on a National Geographic Kids Expedition, but i seriously can’t even describe how much i want to go to Peru. It sounds like an incredible country, and i hear it has beautiful wildlife, and a fascinating culture. Since i love learning about the ways people live in different countries, i love animals, and i love speaking Spanish this trip is the only thing i really want. i know though that people definitely wrote better essays than mine, and took better pictures than me, but i also know that i, like everyone else have a chance. i can’t wait to find out. The suspense is killing me!!! Good luck to everyone!!!!!!!!!!!

    luckstomper,
I said you were lucky because i rarely see snow. When i live in massachussets, i hated it, too. But ever since my family moved to California I have always loved the snow and the rain, lol.

You’re right Jayme! I love the smell of rain (in fact, it’s raining right now). That’s why Spring is MY favorite season. For me, spring is like the whole world is being reborn again. Coming out of hybernation and welcoming the new warmth of spring.

I really want to go to Italy, Germany, South Africa, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, Indoneisia, Panama, Cambodia, Egypt, China, South Korea, Austria, PERU, etc. The sights I want to see are: The Great Wall, Taj Mahal, Petra, Stonehenge, the Pyramids, the Colosseum, the Redeemer, Angkor Wat ruins, Borobudur, Victoria Falls, MACHU PICCHU, the Opera House, the Panama Canal, The Amazon, the Nile, etc. I want to see the whole world and expiriance all of it’s cultures!

Did I tell you guys I might go to Spain and Greece this summer?!? Two years ago, my family hosted a girl from Madrid for the summer. She and I became really close (we still e-mail daily) and this summer, her family has invited me to come stay with them for a month! They have also made plans to take me to Greece while I’m with them!! We would spend a week on a sailing yacht sailing around the Greek Islands. Isn’t that cool! None of it is for sure though. Flights cost a lot right now, so I’m not sure if I can afford it. Hopfully, I will know in a month or two. Wish me luck! And I wish us all luck with Peru!

Rain smells great, but so does sun. If you know what I mean. I like some rain, like I love thunderstorms in the summer!!! When they happen in the middle of the day and you can run outside and get soaked! But I hate when it rains in winter because that can get depressing. And th rain doesn’t smell the same as it does in spring, you know?

    Hey,

Talking about how rain smells good. Well I learned a while ago that its not the rain that smells its actually the plants giving off this smell when it’s taking in water. That’s why it smells good in the Spring because there are plants, and why there is no smell in Winter!

    Softballstar 21,
That is an amazing opportunity and am glad you’re jumping at the chance to go! I’ve been to Tokyo, Japan which was an amazing experience. Now, I really want to go to Paris, France but it costs around $350 for two round-trip airfare there.I really want to see the Eiffle tower and Stonehenge but realize in this economy and life, I will just have to save and hope it doesn’t become a dream.

Wycombestar, I only might have 2 more years to enter. If the trip is in late June or later, I won’t be able to enter in 2 years (you probably know, but you have to be within the age limit when the trip starts, so I may only have one year left) :( I really hope I have 2 more if I don’t win the trip to Peru. But I really want to win this trip to Peru!!!!!

You guys are lucky. For me, this is my last shot to win before I become to old. I’m 14 right now, but my birthday is in December. Now that it’s my last year, I wish I had taken advantage of South Africa and Australia. I didn’t enter those two years. I intended to, but, I guess I just became really busy with other stuff. I DID enter the first year though (and lost, of course)
