April is National Poetry Month

April is National Poetry Month, an official celebration of poetry started by the Academy of American Poets in 1996.

Do you have a favorite poet or poem? Maybe you’ve even written your own poems… share them with other DogEared readers in the comments below.

And how about some of these fun ways to celebrate:

–Write a poem in chalk on the sidewalk.

–Organize a poetry reading during lunchtime with your friends.

–Find the poetry section in your school library, close your eyes, pick a book at random and check it out.

–Write a poem for your mom and save it to give to her as a Mother’s Day gift next month.

Use these online poetry magnets to create your own masterpiece.

OH, and don’t forget to remember Poem in a Pocket Day on Thursday, April 30. Just pick your favorite poem… or one that has special meaning to you. Then, carry it in your pocket and share with friends and family you see that day.

This is a Haiku- it means the first line has 5 syllables, the next 7, then 5 to end.

    I passed the hard test
    It had one thousand questions
    I am so awesome

My favorite poetist is Sharon Creech, I Love That Dog. Here is my poem even if it doesn’t rhyme.

Home is where I like to be, running around as free as can be. I can read, watch T.V. Even rub my dogs belly!

whoa i totally missed the whole month. poetry is like one of few writing categories where i fail epically. great poets: walter dean myers, emily dickinson, edgar allan poe, and ogden nash. here is a very bad haiku from “The Titan’s Curse” by Rick Riordan:

    (Apollo:)Green grass peeks through snow
    Artemis pleads for my help.
    I am so cool.
(Artemis:)The last line is only four syllables.
    (Apollo:) Oh, so it is.
(artemis:) How about “I am so big-headed”?
(Apollo:) No, no that’s six. Hm.
(Apollo[much later]:) Oh, I’ve got it. “I am so awesome!”

I’m not very good at writing poems, but here’s the best one that I’ve written:

There once was a man in a store
Who thought that his life was a bore.
    Then he felt a tickle
    Turned into a pickle
    And wasn’t so bored anymore.

That’s a limerick that I wrote for a school assignment.

    Here’s mine:
    Stones in the sand
    Smooth and shiny
    A wave comes
    Rolling it
    Now it’s even shinier!!
    The End.

I have written some poems here is my best one,

    Winter Song

The Winter sings it’s song in the cool
midnight air while the snowflakes flit
and twirl in the breeze, the nightengale
sings on silent wings a sorrowful
    mourning song,the trees gaily decorated
in Nature’s white lace sit idle all
through the night, longing for the sun’s
warm rays to melt away the snow.

I hope you liked my poem! For more just ask!

Here is my Limerick for school:

I have a cute little bunny
    It’s name is Sunny
    She laughs and plays
She could do it for days!
And everyone thought it was funny!

Dedicated to my real bunny, Sunflower (Sunny)

I decided to write my own poem, just at random.

    Bridge Over Turbulent Waters
    My love is for you.
    I will protect you.
I am your bridge over the turbulent waters, in
    otherwise you would drown.
I am your jacket on a cold winter’s day, which
    otherwise you would freeze.
I am your journal, a source to vent your
    troubles to.
    I am your friend.
So let me care for you.
Let me love you with all my heart.
And maybe, just maybe, you can love me too.

Inspired by Simon and Garfunkle’s song “Like a Bridge Over Troubled Waters”.

Dedicated to my friend and crush, Tyler.
