Peru has been extremely incredible! On the sixth day in Peru I still have not done anything that I did not love. We’ve seen quite an assortment of animals since we came to Peru.

Being in Cusco, we had a day of travels to get to our destination, Machu Picchu. On a photo stop, we were confronted by two woolly alpacas. They had the softest light poofy fur, though it was very matted. The funny thing about them was they couldn’t stop sniffing your face. They would shove their noses right into yours, and if you’re lucky (or unlucky, depending on how your look at it!), they would lick you. I’d never seen anything like it!

On our next photo stop, there lived a family of donkeys. There were two adults and a baby. The baby was adorable, almost softer than the alpacas. I’d never seen an animal with such tiny feet!

The best animal of all was after we reached our final destination of the day. We went to see two spectacled bears at a rescue center that takes in spectacled bears that need help. The bears there were named Pepe and Yogi. They were black and shaggy with brown on their faces. Yogi was only seven, and was hopefully going to be released back into the wild. We learned that spectacled bears are the only kind of bear in South America, and they are endangered. Seeing them was very special. All in all, Peru has been amazing, and the animals have been so cool!

Hi Lucy! This is Dewey’s Mom, Amy! I love your photo! Did you ever dream that you would be up close and personal with an alpaca?! You are so lucky that you were able to touch it and feel how it feels! That feeling will stay with you for the rest of your life! What great experiences! Have a fun time sharing photos with family and friends when you get home!

Awesome! A blog completely on animals. I never new the fact about spectacled bears being the only bears in South America. That is very interesting. Don’t you love how their cream colored patches encircle their eyes like glasses (hence their name)? You are so lucky being able to see all kinds of animals popular in Peru such as the alpaca. Keep on exploring before the trip is over!

Licked by a llama!!! And a Peruvian llama at that! That’s special! I bet you took one or two photos of the spectacled bears but I hope you didn’t let THEM lick you! Please save a story or two to tell Grandpa and me! Love, Grandma

    Lucy,
Your entire trip sounds amazing! It’s very cool that your family keeps in touch with you through blogs also. Exotic animals are very interesting, aren’t they? I’d love to meet those alpacas! The closest I have ever gotten is touching alpaca wool, it is very soft!
