Yesterday morning, First Lady Michelle Obama had a town hall meeting to talk about childhood obesity. Our reporter Reed, along with other kids from around the country, attended the meeting at the White House to talk with Mrs. Obama about her Let’s Move program and eating healthy foods. Here’s Reed’s report from the town hall meeting.

REED: Michelle Obama got inspired to work on ending childhood obesity because she is a mom, and she wants to improve the health of all kids. Changing school lunches so that there are healthy foods will really help, and recess should never be taken out the school day because it’s exercise. Kids shouldn’t always watch TV or play video games. Get outside, because exercise is just moving! The longer you do something unhealthy, the harder it is to break the habit. Kids should start good habits, not bad ones.

Exercise is great for your brain and your heart. Learn more about these amazing organs on National Geographic Kids.

All kids should be healthy and fit but, is it the govorments job to make us be more healthy? When I think of who takes care of me and loves I think of my parents, so shouldn’t parents be responsible for their kids? My mom was not happy whenn she learned that every in my school had to get checked out by doctors to see if we are over weight. Do you think that the govorment has the right to see if students are over weight or you believe it is the parents job?

Dear escape2books, I know what you are saying. However, obesity is a serious condition and should be addressed. If the President finds a way to help, hopefully fewer children will become obese. Though I would be embarrassed too for a doctor at school to have to check my weight!

Lets go back in time, in the 1980s Nacy Regan made a plan called Say No to Drugs it was to help kids of course say no to drugs. The press ridiculed her for getting into people’s business. If you take drugs you can kill yourself, forget how to read and other things, but if you are a few pounds over weight you can still solve the world’s problems. Why did the press change their mind? I am not saying that being over weight is good, but I do not think that the government should make me go to the the doctors to see if I am over wieght. It is none of the governments business to make kids in puplic schools do that.

All right. I agree with you escape2books that doctors should not check kids’ weight at school. I feel your frustration. I really do!

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!! I was using doctor event as a live example, what we really should be concrened about is what is the governments job. In my opinion the founding fathers did not put in the the constitution that it is the governments job to make sure people are heathly or that I have to pay for my neighbor’s broken arm. The government is supposed to act as refferee making sure that businesses are not horribly cheating us [Which they are not] and are supposed to leave us alone to experience the american dream. Not to make sure the whole world is healthy. emshemie3, I agree that being over weight is bad, but that is the parent’s job Not the government!!!!!!!

It is evident escape2books that we don’t seem to see eye-to-eye on this topic, but I am sorry that you are so upset over it. I suggest we just let this drop and hope for the best!

Reed- This is so cool! I’m going to Washington D.C soon to! How do you get to do these kinds of things? Escape2books, I think I may have to side with emsheime on this one. I don’t think the government is trying to invade your desicions, but I think they are just trying to stress the importance of being active and healthy. Obesity is a big problem.
Keep up the debate guys! Way to go Reed!
