BOOK NAME: Ranger’s Apprentice: The Kings of Clonmel
AUTHOR: John Flanagan
Welcome to the first DogEared book club meeting! This week we started reading The Kings of Clonmel by John Flanagan. It’s the eighth book in the Ranger’s Apprentice series. Since not everyone reading the blog has a copy of the book, click “See More” to keep reading. We wouldn’t want to spoil anything for people who don’t want to know what’s going on before they get a chance to read the book themselves!
Last chance to turn back. There are spoilers ahead!
This week, we were busy reading the first 12 chapters of this month’s book. A lot of stuff has been happening! Will, who is a new ranger who trained with Halt, goes to the Ranger Gathering. He ends up helping train new apprentice rangers, and learns that he’s a hero to them! (It must feel really strange for Will to train the apprentices, since he was one himself not too long ago.)
Meanwhile, Will’s old teacher Halt is in Hibernia investigating the activity of a cult called the Outsiders. We learned that he’s run into them with them before, and he’s determined to put a stop to them. When he puts a stop to raiders trying to burn a village’s fishing boats, things get complicated pretty fast!
The kingdom of Clonmel is on the island of Hibernia. Did you know that Hibernia is what the Romans called the island of Ireland? Click here to learn about Ireland.
Here are some words you might not have seen before. (All definitions from the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary)
Baying: Barking with prolonged tones.
Disconcerted: To disturb the composure of.
Fief: Something over which one has rights or exercises control.
