The Magician’s Nephew

BOOK NAME: The Magician’s Nephew
AUTHOR: C.S. Lewis

Just mentioning Narnia sends me into a wonderland full of adventure and magic. This book is the first in The Chronicles of Narnia series and proves to be an engrossing beginning. There is some confusion about this book because most people may think that The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe was the first book, but actually this book is the first. Because it is written by an English author, you’ll find that they spell “Hello” like “Hullo” and other spellings that seem odd to us. This book is absolutely beautiful in every aspect. I don’t always envision the illustrations the same as the artist (done by Pauline Baynes), but overall she still captures the scenes very well. I think it may have been hard to illustrate this book because honestly, Narnia is different for everyone.

The main character, Digory, is a boy who lives in London with his very strange uncle, a frail mother, maids, and an absent father (he’s away in India). So, really he can wander where he pleases. Very soon he meets a girl named Polly Plummer who lives next door to him. Since Polly and Digory’s houses are connected, they venture to the attic that connects the houses and find a door. Behind this door just happens to be Digory’s strange uncle. His uncle is making magical rings that will eventually lead them to Narnia where they bring an evil force that will haunt Narnia for hundreds of years. I can promise that Narnia will enchant you for years to come. It is a trip for your imagination and will inspire you. Whenever I have a bad day I just pick up one of these books and escape to Narnia. You should pay a visit too!

(NOTE: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe was the first Narnia book published, but The Magician’s Nephew is the first book if you are reading in chronological order. -DogEared)

I have read all the Narnia books with my dad in third grade and loved them! A lot of people tend to think that “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” is the 1st, but this one is. My favorite character is Azlan defiantly. If you haven’t read it, you should try it!
For anyone who has read the last one, don’t you think the end is really weird? I won’t say anymore!
Dawn Treader the movie comes out December 10th!! I have liked all the movies, though as the movies progress they seem to look older and older.

ugg. another book series you SHOULD NOT read. i dont loath this as much as i loath the percy jackson series, but i also really hate the chronicles of narnia series! DO NOT READ. DANGER. Go to the town pool, kiss a girl, go play tennis do something better with your life. Youre all good people arent you?

arianamus- we all have our favorites, so why are you telling us what to do? You obliviously have never read a classic before. Narnia is among the best classics. It’s up there with A Tale of Two Cities, The Swiss Family Robinson, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, etc., etc.!

Thanks masterlioness, I’ll probably seeit. Confession: every time I read good books, I like to talk it out like I would if I was in the characters situation. Now that I think about it, Theres probably a reason people stare at me in the hallway…

Jindo2108- The last book is really good but I agree that it is confusing in the end. Arianamus- For your information this is one of the greatest fantasies of ALL time! (It’s right up there with Lord of the Rings!) If you don’t love this book you have been brainwashed by the spineless books that they publish now-and-days. (You know who you are)
No one had apprecitation for the good ole’ classics!!!! This is a wonderful books as is the whole series. I remember begging my Mom to read it over and over! DD

DolphinDreamz- I know! I love this classic book! Kids now are being brainwashed my all those other books, such as Twilight. The quality ones are Classics. Here’s anyone’s starting point!

    Cate4444-
u r ABSOLUTELY right!!!!!!!! Twilight is making kids think that good books have to have weak girls in them who can’t take care of themselves, and their true love comes and saves the day! I want to read at least 1 book where a girl saves a boy, not the other way around. A little bit of romance is ok, but not where the girl is helpless! Like in Percy Jackson. Yah, there is romance, but at least Annabeth can take care of herself.

zoe- I totally agree! Authors are now writing books that make the girl characters not being able to stand up for themselves!

I read Twilight (it was alright, I guess), but LOVE the entire Narnia series, The Lord of the Rings (I just finshed rereading them including The Hobbit), Harry Potter(♥ them!), and Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Also, The Left Behind Series: the Kids, Anne of Green Gables, and The Circle Trilogy (Red, Black, and White) are amazing, good quality books. The list goes on and on but yet people read books like Twilight, or don’t read at all!

I think this is the best book of the series besides the world-wide known 2nd. Did you know that J.R.R. Tolkien, the author of the Lord of the Rings, used to chat with C.S. Lewis in the corner street coffee shop and critique each other’s writing? Guess what? J.R.R. Tolkien said that The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe was simply AWFUL. HE said it was so normal and everyone would be bored and it had already been done by SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO many other authors. But here we are, watching the movie every night of our lives with the souvineirs and 30 copies of every book in the series!

I have the full collection of the Narnia series, and they are all great books. You will especially enjoy them if you like classics like “Anne of Green Gables”. In my opinion, The Magician’s Nephew and The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe are the best ones in the series.
