Stinky Birds May Need Deodorant

New Zealand’s birds have a problem–they’re too smelly for their own good. The birds produce a special wax that helps to keep their feathers healthy. The wax also tends to give off an odor. In the past, this wasn’t a problem because New Zealand doesn’t have any native mammal predators. But now that humans have introduced predators such as dogs, stoats, and cats to the country more than 40 bird species have gone extinct.

Biologist Jim Briskie of Canterbury University in Christchurch, New Zealand, suggests that deodorant might be the answer. “If we prove that this is a problem, we might be able to envision some kind of odor-eater or deodorant we could put into the nest to absorb some of those odors and protect them more effectively,” Briskie said. But deodorant may not be the best solution. The birds’ smells might be a way that the birds communicate with their mates or offspring.

Can you think of any ideas on how this problem might be solved?

I think they should try to control the predators, especially since the predators aren’t even native to New Zealand and I don’t think that taking them away would cause any serious issues.

It’s so sad that this is always the case. Some animal is about to become extinct because we brought some non-native animal into the other animal’s habitat. I think we should leave them in their natural habitat, only er…other animal proof it. Ta-da! End of problem.

Gross..They should find some, and test them, and release back into wild to see if the young react to the smell r something like that.

This is very interesting! Invasive species are becoming a problem everywhere. It’s tough to say what would be the best solution for this problem. I’d have to agree with a few others who said to keep track of the predators and test out their deodorant idea.

U could put the birds in a special place where no dogs cats or other predators are allowed.

I guess the animal shelter has to get some birds and put deodorant every 1 a month in New Zealand.

    deodorant?! what nonsense!!
this poor native animal is in danger of getting
“exstinked” (joke) just because some people are silly enough to bring non-native animals there!!
