BOOK NAME: The Graveyard Book
AUTHOR: Neil Gaiman

Welcome to today’s book club meeting!

We’ve finished the five chapters of The Graveyard Book, following Bod on his many adventures living in the graveyard. This week, Bod faced serious danger, but he also made a few new friends.

If you have finished chapter five, click “See More” to get to the discussion.

If you haven’t read that far yet, or if you’re still looking for a copy, stop here!

Some time later, Bod visits Potter’s field, where suicides, thieves, and the unshriven are buried. He meets a witch named Liza, and tries to find her a headstone, as people buried in Potter’s Field don’t have markers for their graves. While he’s working on getting one, he runs into the Sleer again. He also has his first trip out into the world of the living–at it goes horribly wrong. But good news for Bod: He finally learns how to Fade.

Bod also attends a dance called the Macabray with the graveyard residents. When the winter blossoms bloom, the living cut flowers to give to the town’s residents. Then the living and the dead all dance together.

Why do you think people might want to become ghouls?

Miss Lupescu says that she learned things. What do you think she learned?

Do you think Liza was really a witch? Why or why not?

Why do you think the dead won’t talk about the Macabray afterwards?

Scarlett is going to Scotland with her family. Do you think Bod will ever see her again?

Here
are some
words you might not have seen before. (All definitions
from the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary.)

Astride: With one leg on either side.

Dandy: A man who gives exaggerated attention to personal appearance.

Prohibition: An order to restrain or stop.

This week we’ll finish the book–just in time for Halloween. See you next Wednesday!
