Adventurers of the Year Chosen

National Geographic Adventure has chosen their ten Adventurers of the Year. Readers are now encouraged to vote for their favorites for the People’s Choice Adventurer of the Year. One of the adventurers is only 12 years old: Matt Moniz, a mountain climber. Matt’s big 2010 adventure was this summer. In less than two months, Matt climbed the highest point in all 50 states with his dad.

Matt thinks it’s really important that kids get outside. “It’s important to try to encourage kids to go outside and protect public land. In another 30 years, if we had a president who just grew up in the city and played video games all his life, he might not be as focused on protecting our land,” he says.

What was your best adventure in 2010? Leave a comment below and tell us!

Read about all of the 2010 nominees, then vote for your favorite on National Geographic Adventure.

    Hi Everyone!

    Luckstomper here. Wow, has my reign of first commenter aroused from hibernation again? We’ll see. But this is pretty cool! At first I was like “What. What, is, this?!” I was not excited. As I read it I felt better, and I will be sure to vote. And the highest point in ALL 50 states! That’s wicked cool! …Oklahoma must’ve been easy. Here’s a fun fact: Did you know Pennsylvania’s highest point is lower than Colorado’s lowest point? I could be wrong, so check. And if it is so that I am wrong, change Pennsylvania to Oklahoma. But I’m almost (emphasis on almost) positive. Talk to everyone soon!

    Haha! I guess the first comment that appears also depends on what time zone you’re in. I live in the PST zone, so by the time I get home, which is 3:30 P.M. here, it is already about 6:30 P.M. in the EST zone. National Geographic has long been closed for the day. But congratulations anyways on still being the first commenter! I’m going to vote too. I wonder who will be the Adventurer of the Year?

    I wish I could do that. It would be AWESOME to do what he did. Luckstomper, what you said about all of the highest and lowest points intrigued me, so I did a little research. You were right, the highest point in Pennsylvania is Mount Davis at 3,213 ft. while the lowest point in Colorado is at the Arikaree river at 3,315 ft. Anyway, I already voted. I voted for Ed Stafford because he’s a pretty hardcore dude. I mean, walking through the entire Amazon rainforest for 2 1/2 years? The other contestants did some pretty cool stuff, but that’s just crazy.

    Hey Grilla13! Matt here. So I climbed 50 highpoints, the highest spot in each State. Not all were mountains but some were really big like Alaska’s high point Denail at almost 21,000 feet! Some of my favorites that you should read about or maybe climb some day are Mt. Hood, Mt. Rainier, Mt Granite, Gannett Peak, Borah Peak and Guadalupe Peak. Can you guess the the highest point in the lower 48 States? Happy Holidays! Matt

    Hi Celeste,

    Happy New Year! Great question, the highest peak in Montana is Granite Peak. I would say that was the second most difficult of my climbs besides Denali in Alaska. The approach is really long, about 18 miles each way and the climb is technical requiring rope and protection. It also is one of my most favorite mountains. Are you from Montana?

    Hello everyone!

    Climber Matt–

    Yes i do live in Montana. Thats really cool. What did you think of Montana? Pretty huh? (you dont have to agree) I have climbed Baldy Mountain, and i couldn’t believe how hard it was, and I’m sure its not even close to how high Granite is. Climbing is really fun. Was the Mountain that you climbed really “non steep” (i cant think of the right word) at first and then really steep all of the sudden?

    Hey Cowgirlexplorer! Montana was AMAZING, it was super pretty. We were greeted by a bear as soon as we drove into the state! I’ll have to read about Baldy Mountain. Granite – the first day it was flat and a little uphill, but the second day was almost all rock climbing.

    Piperrox you are so lucky to live in Alaska!! – I love climbing and exploring in your state. I went to the Ruth Glacier last Spring Break to climb and ski – we visited the Mountain House. Unfortunately, I did not see the Northern Lights but one day.

    Beast21 it is such a sense of accomplishment to be at the top of any mountain, the views are indescribable. I enjoy climbing a LOT! and it is super fun.

    Welcome new bloggers. Matt, it’s really cool that you come and coment on this blog. do you have the record for being the youngest ever to climb the 50 highest points of each state? If so then you’re sort of like a celebrity I guess. I’ve only climbed two mountains, but they were really more of hikes. one was Big Schloss in the Shenandoah Mountains in Virginia, and the other, called Signal Nogg was also in the Shenandoah Mountains. I’d like to go hiking more often, but I’m near sea level. Over here we’re about 100 feet above sea level and any mountains are several hours away. I only get into any mountains about once a year.

    January 5, 2011, 10:58 pm

    HEY #1 Beast The tallest mountain I have climbed is Cerro Aconcagua. Aconcagua is located near Mendoza, Argentina and is 22,841 ft. In meters that is 6962 – most climbers like to use meters when talking about mountains outside the US. Aconcagua is the highest point in South America and the tallest elevation in the western hemisphere.

    Here is are 2 questions for all of you all – What is the point on Earth closest to space – stars, moon, planets, aliens ; ) and How many mountains on earth are 8000 meters or higher?

    Hey LazyHmk – I meant to say that the expedition took 43 Days. We timed it from the top of Denali to the final peak Mauna Kea. If you count the time it took to climb Denali it would be 55 Days!

    For those of you not sure if you could climb big mountains – I’d bet you’d be surprised. Just give it a try.

    Hey there Skimp! So technically I set two world records – the fastest to climb all 50 High Points in the United States and yes the youngest to complete the highpoints. The first record, speed, I think is really very cool the second is ok but I don’t really like to push youngest records because you can imagine someone might try to beat the record who is just too young – when would it ever stop?? I like the idea of First Ascents and Speed Records because anyone can accomplish them no matter what age.

    You’re very lucky, the Shenandoah mountains are beautiful and can be challenging. I think the Shenandoahs are wonderful places to train for big mountains. Just put a heavy pack on you back and go out for steep hikes and you’ll be ready for Denali before you know it!

    As for sea-level, no need to worry about that, one of the best climbers in the world Ed Viesturs lives in Seattle a few feet off the water!! He has climb all 8000 meter peaks like K2 and Everest without any oxygen (climbers most of the time need to breath oxygen from bottles they carry when they climb above 7000 meters or about 23000 feet). Ed has a great book called “No Short Cuts to the Top”.

    All right Matt, I have a question for you-

    Are you ever scared out of your MIND on the mountain tops?????

    I would be!!!!! But hey, you’re talking to the wimp who can barely climb any climbing walls without recoiling first in fright……….I guess I should stick to climbing trees…
    Second question- How did you get started climbing????

    Hi Everyone!

    Luckstomper here. Woah, Matt, I guess you really are an expert climber. I have one question for you. It’s really random, but is there a reason why you call Mt. McKinley, Denali? I know the mountain is referred to as both. But is there any preference? That’s all. Talk to everyone soon.

    ~~~~JON~~~~
    P.S. On my Bucket List, is to climb each of the continents’ highest peak. It’s a pretty far-fetched goal, but hey, everyone can have dreams right? :)
    Hi Jindo – When I’m climbing I don’t really get too scared because I spend a lot of time in the mountains and it’s kinda like home for me. We all have some fears, some people are afraid of high places some get a little nervous in dark places(like me) it just your mountain to climb. A little bit at a time.
    I started climbing when I was 9 on a trek to Everest Base Camp. It was one of my favorite adventures! After that…
    Hey Luckystomper! I like that question – officially the mountain is called Mt. McKinley after our 25th President William McKinley. To the native Athabascans it was always called Denali – the High One. Out of respect for the Athabascan people, mountaineers refer to the mountain as Denali.
    I’d like to someday complete the 7 summits too! I think that is a great dream. You get to explore the world, meet amazing people and see awesome sights!
    Hello Everyone!
    Matt- At the tops of mountains are there ever anythings that people leave at the top? Like, at the top of Mount Baldy at my house, there is a jar that you put a note in saying how the hike went or whatever. And some people write their names with rocks.
    Hi, everyone this is Elizabeth. I commented earlier last week, but it never showed up.
    School is sooooo stressful. I have exams starting on Thursday. I have to take a Physical Science, Honors Algebra 2, and Honors Civics and Economics exams.
    To make it even more stressful… I didn’t have school Monday or Tuesday of this week, so it reduced my review time with the teachers….. All because of 1 inch of snow!!!! That is it, 1 inch. North Carolina declared a state of emergency on Monday. When I heard that they declared a state of emergency, I looked at my mom and just busted out laughing. It is crazy. The news anchors make it sound like there is 2 feet of snow outside….. 1 inch…..
    My family has decided to go to Cancun, Mexico January 22-25!!!!! We have a four day weekend from school, and because my dad works for an airline company we can fly for free…. So we are going to Cancun for the weekend. We are going to go snorkeling, fishing, and see the Mayan ruins located right outside of Cancun!!!!!!!!! I can not wait. I have never done anything like this in my entire life!!!! When we get back I will post some pictures on My Shot. My user name in NikonCoolpix. Naturephotographer, was too long for the user name box.
    I think that is all…..bye!!!
    Sorry for not responding sooner – home work and a freestyle ski competition this weekend kept me busy. So Sad123, I hope you’re not really sad! My next adventure is a mountain in Peru called Alpamayo. I think it’s one of the most interesting mountains in the world and it will be my most technical climb. Look it up I think you’ll agree. If I don’t do that I may try to climb a mountain in Carstensz Pyramid in New Guinea. I’m not sure quite yet!
    Hey again Cowgirlexplorer! Yes there are many, many items on top of mountains. On Borah Peak in Idaho I found a big US Flag and pole! I was surprised because it is not easy to get to the top of Borah. In Nepal, the peak of Kala Patar was decorated with colorful prayer flags. On some mountains I leave behind something special to me like a small bracelet from my friend Cam and a glass bead from my grandmother on top of Kilimanjaro. I’ve also found geocaches around summits.
    Hi Everyone!
    Luckstomper here!
    Matt- So exactly, where have you been? I would love to travel as much as you do! It’s always been my dream to travel around the world someday. Also, I can’t believe you are going to Peru. Do you know how many of us on this blog were dying to go there 2 years ago, for the 2009 HOEC contest? There were a lot. I know I envy you. While down there (that is if you go), will you climb the entire Inca Trail, all the way to the to Machu Picchu? If not, I would seriously look into it, I heard it’s an amazing climbing experience.
    Naturephotographer- That’s so cool you are going to Cancun, Mexico! You are going literally right north of where I went this summer (I went to Belize)!!! Believe me you are going to have a blast, exploring all of the Mayan ruins. I have a picture of one of them in Belize on my MyShot (same username, Luckstomper). I will have to put up more. For me it was just so hard to believe that I was walking through a once bustling city, of an ancient civilization. When you come back, be sure to tell us all about your trip! And one question, why do you have a 4-day weekend from the 22-25? I know this coming weekend we have a 3 1/2 day weekend because of MLK Day (which is always the third Monday in January).
    Speaking of vacations, my parents are planning a 2-week trip to California this summer! My parents are wine enthusiasts, and are like expert wine people. So their familiar with Napa Valley, and are friends with a bunch of the owners of the wineries up there. I’m not going anywhere abroad this year. My parents say their saving up for mine and my siblings private high school and college funds. I’m fine with that. I would put education over a trip any day. But I’m wicked pumped. We are going to be staying in San Fransisco area, and the Napa Valley area. That’s all I know right now, but I’m doing a ton of research. Right now I’m trying to convince them to go to Sequoia National Park. Shastasteph, I know that you are familiar with this region with California (I believe), is there anything that you would put on a “Must Do List”? Well that’s all for now. Talk to everyone soon!
    That’s really cool that you climbed all those mountains. I visited New Hampshire last summer and I climbed Mt. Tecumseh, it was a hard so I can’t imagine what you went through! What mountains had the most beautiful views in your opinion?
    January 12, 2011, 8:02 pm
    Luckstomper…. we were supposed to have a three day weekend this coming weekend and a four day weekend next weekend. This weekend is MLK day, but next weekend was for teacher workdays so they can prepare for the new high school semester. It is really confusing.
    I have now officially been out of school for 4 days because of 1 stinking inch of snow!!!!!!! It is driving me insane!!!! It is ridiculous. The county just needs to suck it up and invest in some snow plows. This could have been 100% preventable if they had snow plows and salting trucks. Sorry I need to vent…..
    I have a total of 12 pics up on MyShot. more to follow….. I am most definitely going to check yours out Luckstomper.
    Hello Everyone!
    Wow, naturephotographer, that’s alot of snow. My school (i think) has never cencleed for a snow day. It was cancelled for the first time this year because it was like -30 and the water pipes froze. But other than that we have school pretty much all the time. Actually, we have a four day week schedule, so we have three day weekends every weekend. Its pretty great!
    Cancun, wow! you are so fortunate, i have never been out of the country. Really cool. I will definintely check out your my shot. I have one too, same username.
    Luckstomper, California! Really cool place. I love going to visit, but i couldn’t ever imagine visiting there. It’s so huge! I know its kinda (really) a big stretch from San Francisco to San Diego, but if you can, you should go to Sea World. When i was 9 i went there, and one of the killer whale trainers asked me if i wanted to be in the Shamu Show. I said yea of course. I got to a bunch of killer whales, and make them do tricks. They are huge! I also got a carved wooden necklace from one of the trainers named Matt, and it says “Celeste, always believe in your dreams.” It was a really cool experience. I will NEVER forget it.
    Matt– your probably getting really bored of all the questions i ask, but i was just wondering. How do you do school, if your traveling all the time to climb mountains? It seems like it would take up alot of time. But that is so cool that you get to go to all of those places. I am sure you have been more places already that most people will ever get to go in their lifetime. You are really fortunate.
    Hi Everyone!
    Luckstomper here.
    Naturephotographer- Are you kidding me? 4 days for 1″ of snow? For real? We just had a Nor’Easter yesterday, and we got nearly 2 feet of snow. We had no school yesterday, of course, but we only had a 2 hour delay today to finish up cleaning the roads. I wish we got 4 days off for 1 inch! Ugh, that’s really stupid. Hasn’t the snow melted yet? Or haven’t the the cars like run over the snow so much there is nothing left? Whatever, that’s crazy. I feel your pain.
    Cowgirlexplorer- I have been to California before, but that was when I was really little. We went to Las Vegas, NV and San Diego, CA in that trip. I went to SeaWorld, Legoland, the San Diego Zoo, and a bunch of other places. But I’m wicked excited for my trip. Also you have never had a snow day before? Really? Doesn’t it snow in Montana?
I am surprised you thought my camera did a goods job. haha my camera is like three megapixels and takes at least ten seconds to snap a picture. But thanks anyway.
    Luckstomper– of course we have snow. In fact it snow a mess load here. But i guess we just have good road plower people and they get their job done early so we can go to school. Also, when you live in a small town of about 700 people, theres not really that many roads to plow. Also were pretty tough here so… haha
    Hi Everyone! Wow what a busy week with school! Luckstomper I have traveled a lot over the past four years. Lots of countries in Europe but the coolest places are Nepal, Tanzania, Argentina, Patagonia, Russia and Alaska. I will look into the Inca trail and maybe if we have time we can visit Machu Picchu.
    Cowgirlexplorer-never too many questions! I like to share my adventures. Most of my expeditions happen over vacations like the 50 State 50 Peaks expedition started right at the end of my school year, in Colorado that’s around May 25th and I finished in later July. When I climbed Cerro Aconcagua in Argentina I took two weeks off right before December Break. It’s summertime in Argentina in December but still cold at 23,000 feet!
    Hey Hurdler23! There are so many amazing views at the tops of mountains it kinda hard to say what is the best but… I reached the summit of Kala Patar in Nepal at sunrise just in time to see the sun beaming behind Mt. Everest and in the distance you can see the incredible peak Ama Dablam – like a giant Matterhorn. The summit of Guadalupe Peak in Texas was also really interesting with all the desert plants and alpine glow. Sometimes the weather is so extreme it can also can create its own beauty like when I climbed Mt. Rainier the clouds from a ferocious storm in the valley made the peaks around me look like islands in a sea. Could go on forever…
    The last snow day I got was when we had 2 feet of snow in September – we never get days off in Colorado!!
    Hey everybody. It seems like you guys are going to get some traveling done. I don’t know about me. I might move this summer, but you never know, the military doesn’t like to tell you these things until theyr’e about to happen. My family might move to some place who knows where on who knows when this summer, or we’ll live here in maryland for another year and then move who knows where on who knows when. I hope we move this summer because I don’t like staying in one place for too long. the longest I’ve ever lived in one place was three years and I don’t want to break that streak. It may sound kind of selfish, but I want to travel the world. Through the military I’ve seen alot more than some people four times my age, but I want to see more. I want to see everything everywhere. I want to experience every culture too. Snowdaysand come easily in Maryland. We’ve been having snow on and off here. We had one snowday for two inches, and one two hour early dismissal, and a two hour delay for a half inch. It makes me mad because every time we get out of school for snow, we lose some spring break. This year we didn’t get on winter break till december 23 which was crazy, and were in school till June 20. The school board is holding us as long as possible giving us as much school as possible, but any time missed is taken off spring break. Plus the school board cancels school as soon as the weather report comes on that there’ll be snow. on the day we had a two hour early dismisal there wasn’t any snow until 9 o’clock that night. Sorry, but like naturephotographer I need to rant because I hate my school (which is part of the reason I want to move) and thanks to the school board I have to stay there longer.
    Matt, I’ve lived in Europe and I loved it. Have you ever been to southern Spain? It’s crazy how you can drive fifteen minutes from the shore and suddenly your up in the mountains.
    Naturephotographer, I have a My-Shot too. Same user name. I check out your pictures. That’s it for now, later.
    Hi everyone. I just found out that Cancun is not in my future….. The Florida Keys are instead. My dad decided that Cancun was too much money right now, so instead we are going to visit some long lost family whom live on No Name Key, Florida. While we are down there we are going to go snorkeling and hopefully go fishing with the family members I have never met….. I am still really excited because at this point, other than Hawaii, the Florida Keys are the warmest part of the U.S.A. (If that makes any sense at all……)
    Hi Everyone!
    Luckstomper here.
    Hurdler23- I see that you in my neighboring state. I live in Massachusetts. When scraps of storms empty out of the Great Lakes, we sometimes get the remnants, but if we do it’s not much. We usually get most of our snow from Nor’Easters. For people who don’t know what those are: Nor’Easters are storm systems coming down from the North East (so areas above or to the right of Maine). And like I said before, these storm systems always give us loads of snow.
    Jindo2108- I feel sorry for you. I feel sorry for all of the people who have never experienced snow. Whether you have experienced the joy of snow before, I can probably guarantee that you’ve never experienced how mean and bitter snow can be. Two years ago it left hundreds of thousands of homes in my state powerless. For me it was 6 days, with no electricity. That meant no TV, no showers, no stove, no computers, no phones, the inability to charge things like phones, computers, etc. It was like living in the wilderness. We also had no heat. So remember snow can be fun and joyous, but it also has a sinister, awful side.
    For the Cali question, no I didn’t go to Disneyland, but I have been to Florida’s DisneyWorld.
    Cowgirlexplorer- Wow, a town of 700 people?! That’s smaller than my middle and high school populations put together! Wow, that’s a small town! My second-aunt and second-cousin live in Montana, and they visit at least once a year. They have a horse ranch, and lots of land. That’s all I know, they never really talk about their neighbors or their life much. But 700 people, you must know everyone! With such a small community you guys all must be very close, and tough ;) . I couldn’t imagine that it would take that long to plow roads that sustain only 700 people, haha. My town has about 12,000 people, a little harder, and longer to plow all of those driveways, and roads.
    Matt- I wish I could travel like you. I would LOVE to travel like you. I’ve been out of the country a few times to Canada, the Turks and Caicos, Antigua, and Belize.
    Skimp27- Why don’t you like to stay in one place for too long? I think that would drive me insane if I were to move every couple of years. There’d be no time settle in, make long lasting friends. I mean, I love the aspect of travelling to all new places, and experiencing the new cultures, but I like to do that on trips. I would always like to have the feeling that I have a home that I could always go to, that’s mine. But I guess, that’s not everyone’s cup of tea. You know, if that’s what you like, keep doing it.
    Naturephotographer- Bummer, that stinks. Maybe some other time right? :) But hey, the Florida Keys are still an awesome trip. My dad got married there this past summer, and he and my new step-mom are thinking are returning for a vacation this summer, but nothing is set in stone yet. And I’m not sure about the Florida Keys being the warmest part of the USA (other than Hawaii). I would’ve thought that would belong to Death Valley, California. That even being warmer than Hawaii.
    Well, that’s all for now. Talk to everyone soon!
    Wow today has been a long day!
    I have my Earth Science Midterm tomorrow and we are learning about causes of climate. It is really interesting because were learning about ocean currents and winds right now, it makes me more aware of the weather in my town. It sort of funny to think that something as simple as the wind could affect our planet in such a big way. Now I’ve got to go and study…
    I’m sur the whole experience was amazing not just reaching the top. Exploring nature in any way is fun, but there always has to be a hard part for it to be rewarding.
    Naturephotographer, that must be very upsetting, but Florida Keys is still a very nice place. I’ve heard that it’s the only place in the continental U.S that has clear and unpolluted water. Luckstomper, it’s complicated why I don’t want to stay in one place. It has to do with being a military brat. I’ve heard somwhere that brats “fit in nowhere, but are expected to fit in everywhere.” It rings completely true. I don’t fit in anywhere. At my current school, I feel kind of secluded. I have good friends, but they don’t understand me very well. I like to talk about the military stuff and I use alot of terminology from other places. It’s tense and akward talking to someone with a different accent who says things I can’t undrestand. There are only like three other military brats in my grade and, much to my dismay, they’re navy. If there are alot of other military brats, It’s good, but people are always moving around and either you move first, or they will. My last reason would be that I’m not a big fan of southern Maryland. I don’t like my school system, I don’t have much time for much other than school and tkd. I want to get away to somewhere else where I can have more freedom, more time, different martial arts, and people I can relate to better. Sure It’s hard to move, but the grass can get way greener, in my perspective.
    January 19, 2011, 8:24 pm
    Awww Skimp27 that is sooooo sad that you don’t have anyone to relate too…… That totally just bummed the rest of my day… I hate knowing that there are kids that feel leftout on a daily basis.
    I remember when I moved in 6th grade, I spent the first 2 weeks of school feeling like I would never make any friends. I still have an issue with feeling left out when I am around people I am just acquaintances with, but I am trying to loose the feeling of awkwardness. I would try and give advice to you, but you know more about moving than I do. (Plus I am not really original with giving advice.)
    I have to go….. I am trying to do some last minute studying for my Honors Algebra 2 exam. I have to take the Algebra 2 exam and then my Honors Civics Exam, and then Key West here I come!!!!
    Hello Everyone! I have the best snow day story. We were staying at our house in the Colorado mountains over the holiday weekend – Winter Park, getting ready to come home Monday when a massive avalanche (300 feet wide and 25 feet deep) buried the road in snow. We were stuck in Winter Park all Tuesday while they cleared the snow and of course the skiing was unreal!
    Hey Skimp27 I hope your week is getting a little better. It must be really hard to move schools and have to start all over again. You have friends here though!
    Hi ya Said! Now we know each other : ) Getting to the top is always a nice feeling but most fun for me are the technical challenges of getting to the summit. I like rock and ice climbing and sliding down from the top – glissading, is a blast! One peak took me over 2 hours to climb this one snow field and just 4 minutes to glissade down!!
    I’m going to Salt Lake City tonight to meet tomorrow with some people at the big Outdoor show. I’m an Ambassador with the Outdoor Nation so it’s an opportunity to get companies involved in helping kids experience the outdoors. If you don’t know about the organization you should check them out. They have some cool ways to participate. Well I have to run to school!
    Hey Climber Matt it sounds like you have a lot of fun climbing mountains. I wish that I could climb a mountain. I only go on trails when I go camping in the summer. We go to Worlds End State Park its really fun! This year were going with a bunch of my dads friends. I love going in the creek there. One year we went tubing! At one spot it seemed like White Water Rafting! Have you ever gone rafting?
    Actually, right now I’m supposed to be writing a personal narrative, but its hard!!!! ( Plus, it can occasionally be really annoying cause a story about your dog getting out for a few minutes and him bounding right over too you turns into the tale of how your dog got out and was lost for hours until you jumped across his path and heroically caught him.)
    ANYWAY…………….
    Hi Catnip – thanks! Sounds like you had a blast in Cancun! Do you speak any Spanish? Helloooo Guitarrock! Yes it is both really fun and rewarding to climb mountains – you should give it a try.
    Hi Everyone! I just finished up my school portfolio (my self assessment of my school work and progress) and presented to my teachers and parents. Glad to get that done! It is a nice day hear in Colorado we’re up at our house in the high-country. My family comes here most weekends during the winter. I’m on a Freestyle ski team – moguls and jumps so this is my time to spend with my coaches and team.
    We also have some great backcountry skiing in this area, no lifts just climb up high and ski down. You need to be very careful though because it’s in the heart of avalanche country. So we are always prepared and check the avalanche forecast before we climb.
    Cowgirlexplorer, I can’t find the photo you posted??? I looked in My Shot but can’t seem to find them??
The funniest part is my mom and brother went to the store for some cheese and came home with Willy instead. My cat is NOT impressed.     One question though- So, if your dog is bloodhound/corgi, how big is he?
    When I got my dog, I was like that too! I remember always stepping back and being in amazement that there is a dog living with me. ( I still do it now, but then again,I haven’t had my dog for that long)
    How old is your dog?
    jindo210- Willie is about 3 feet long, by 1 foot high. The vet the Humane Society brought him to estimated that he is 2 years old. The Humane Society found him wondering the streets no ID, nothing.
    We are attempting to teach him to sit….. We gave him a bath this afternoon and he did really considering he probably has never had one before. When I pored the water on him it dripped off of him brown. It was really nasty because A. that means the Humane Society didn’t even bathe him before they gave him up for adoption and B. it explains why he smelled so bad. Now he smells like pina colada!!!
    naturephotographer-Awwwwww!!!!! Your dog sounds really sweet!
    I agree though, it’s kinda weird that they didn’t bath him before they gave him up.
    But still……
    I doubt he would of smelled like pina colada if they bathed him at the shelter, I guess that’s an upside………
    BTW,everyone, I just got a My Shot account(no pics up yet) so, if you see a comment from Jindo, that’s me.
    Hey everybody. I’ve been a while, but I’m not dead. I don’t want you guys to feel sorry for me. I love my life and I wouldn’t have it any other way. There are just some times when things start to get harder, but who doesn’t have problems? I have some pretty cool news, I am moving this summer, and you’ll never guess where. I actually don’t know where either because the military likes to leave you in the dark as much as possible but, my dad sent a list of places that we could possibly move to that he would prefer. The list might effect where we move because my dad’s an officer. The list is Ohio, Japan, Germany, Massachusetts, Colorado, Utah, Australia, Alaska, Belgium, and England. I wouldn’t mind moving any of those places, but I would prefer Alaska, Australia, Japan, Ohio, Germany, and Colorado. Chances are we won’t move to any of those places, but who knows?
    Naturephotograper- You’re lucky to have gotten a dog. I’ve always wanted a dog too, but my mom says they take too much work and it would be hectic if we had to move with them everywhere. It takes ALOT of money to ship them anywhere.
    Matt- getting in those negatives is pretty cold. Where I lived North Dakota it got in the -60′s too. Me and my brother’s like it cold Which is why it would be good to move to Colorado. I also have old friends who live there (Colorado Springs) right now.
    Cowgirlexplorer- Recently I’ve been getting jittery and hoping I get a phone call from NG kids. I’m really excited but I’m also really nervous. You’re right, Shastasteph hasn’t commented in a while, easily a month or too. Maybe she got lucky and the judges gave her a phone call so she doesn’t need to worry anymore. I saw your HOEC picture and I love it. It turned out really good.
    That’s about all I have too say. I just put alot more pictures on myshot so check them out. Everyone for the HOEC, stay hopeful. We can still win, just hope we impress the judges. Later.
    Hello Again Everyone – Just turned 13 today! Really fun day skiing with friends.
    Hi Blondy! Once we got used to climbing day after day it was fine. We just climbed, ate, and slept. More fun than it sounds!
    Hey Vlad_Tod! Next I think I may climb in the Andes this summer. I have been looking at both Peru and Bolivia – but I’m starting to lean towards Bolivia. I would fly into La Paz – one of the highest cities in the world. I’d like to climb some of the 6000M peaks in the Cordillera Real – and practice my spanish.
    Zinga you can climb a mountain! Just go for it…
    Hi Zombieman – Mt Everest can be extremely cold but mountaineers fear wind more than the cold. It can quickly freeze you and make finding your way almost impossible.
    Hi Green glad to have you as a friend.
    Helloooo Wedganater!!! Yes I have been to Mt. Everest to the basecamp a few years ago. So amazing a place – we also climbed a mountain very close to Mt. Everest called Kala Patar. On the summit you have the perfect view of Everest – luck for me I saw the sunrise behind the summit peak.
    Hey Ariesguy – So we saw moose in Maine and Alaska, grisly bears in Montana, an angry Grouse that chase us around in Minnesota, Black Bears in Tennessee, some cool lizards in Texas and a wild salamander on Mt. Marcy, New York. I have more but need to get some sleep!
    Still need to check out the contest Cowgirlexplorer – hopefully tomorrow.
    I want to share a project that I’m working on called Spark – hope to soon. Also would love to hear what adventures you all have planned for this summer.
    Hi everyone this is Elizabeth. Sorry I haven’t written lately, but there aren’t enough hours in the day…
    Jindo2108 thank you for asking about Willie. He is doing very well on certain levels… He hasn’t had any accidents in the house in the last week, but on the other hand he has chewed through four leashes, and one harness. My cat is still not a fan of Willie. Max has set up a new schedule for himself, so he can avoid Willie as much as possible. It can be quite comical at sometimes.
    I think this is it for now…
    NaturePhotographer- Willie sounds awesome! With the leashes and harnesses, at least he isn’t as bad as my friend’s dog, which will eat plastic keys and stuffed animals, then, well, yeah. Does he still smell like pina colada??? Ugh, my dog smells right now….he really needs a bath…………
    The cat sounds very funny…..
    Is Max the cat in that pic you have up on My Shot???
    Islandgirlstar808- First of all, it’s AWESOME that you live in Hawaii! Plus, your parents are in a reggae band? Cooooolllll……..
    I know, it’s so cool the way this blog is…….
    Which island do you live on? It’s fine if you don’t wanna say,though.
    Skimp27- Thanks for the post on Dogeared…I’m gonna read that book now…
    Wonder what Lukestomper’s up to??? He hasn’t commented in a while….
    Hi everyone!
    Luckstomper here. Wow, I haven’t commented in a LONG time. It’s been over a month. Sorry. Although I have been keeping up to date with everyone’s comments. I just haven’t had the time to comment like I would. School has been bogging down my life, and on top of that I applied to a private school (and got in). So I’m stressed about that, because you have to send in your report card to the school, and I’ve been trying to keep my grades up as high as I can so I can get into the classes I want.
    I’m in New York right now visiting my aunt, uncle, and two cousins. I’m on February Vacation right now. And like Hurdler23 said it’s finally warming up a bit here in the North East. All of this snow we got is finally melting!
    Well I have a bunch more to say, but I’ve got to go and play with my cousins! Talk to everyone soon!
    Luckstomper~
    congrats on getting into a private school! I’m going to my local high school next year, but mostly because the private schools in my area don’t offer the sports I want to take. Which is weird if you ask me.
    Islandgirlstar808~
    what’s it like to be homeschooled? I don’t know if I could take it, I rely on going to school everyday to see my friends and just get away from home for awhile.
    Better get back to my homework… I have earth science and a multi-genre project to finish! Bye
    Islandgirlstar808- Nice!!! The only time I went to Hawaii, we went to Kauai and loved it! That’s so awesome!!
    Hurdler23- Wait, you’re having winter break now?? Or did you have it in December? I’m confused….sorry, it’s just the living in CA thing…….
    On the other hand, it’s awesome that it’s finally warming up!
    Skimp27 just posted on the new one………should we move over there, or just keep posting here???Hmmmmm…….
    Oh yeah, did anyone get that post? I didn’t, but it is exciting they’re judging……………
    Jindo2108~
    I had a week off in December and I have a week off now for winter break. It’s what my school has always done, but I can see how it could be confusing.
    Islandgirlstar808~
    Thanks for the answer, I don’t think I would be able to be homeschooled but if it works for you that’s great! It must be awesome to live in Hawaii, what’s your favorite thing to do? (if you don’t mind me asking)
    I can’t wait for this weekend! My brother has indoor track sectionals and our school has a chance of going to states again. It looks like spring is going to be here soon, but you never know with the weather New York has been having. Well talk to everyone soon!
    February 23, 2011, 12:54 pm
    Hi Everyone!
    Luckstomper here.
    Jindo2108- Here in the northeast we have 4 breaks total. We have Winter break (Christmas time), February Vacation (middle of February), Spring Break/April Vacaction (middle of Spring), and Summer Break (summer). I’m also on vacation right now. The only reasoning I have behind February Vacation is to give us a break from the dreary days of winter, which quite frankly is needed up here. Hope that clears some things up.
    Okay so last night I’m sleeping (obviously) and I have a dream. Now for me, I don’t know why, but when I have a dream that I can actually remember (which is rare) it always comes off stronger than needs to be. I actually feel as though I’m there living and breathing in the moment. Sometimes it’s scary. So last night I had a dream. It took place in some decade far in the future, where the world was in chaos. Now I’m a soldier type guy working for a group that’s trying to restore world order called The Retaliation. there’s a small bag that’s key in this plan to restore world order and the “bad guys” are after it. It’s given to me to hide away. My character perspective keeps changing throughout the dream because now I’m a kid, who’s all scuffed up and bruised. I notice I’m holding a glass orb that fits in my palm. It’s also glowing brown. I meet some other kids with these orbs too. All glowing certain colors too. There’s far more to the dream than this, but let me tell you, it was EPIC. So epic if I’m ever motivated enough, I’ll write it into a book.
    Well that’s all for now. Talk to everyone soon!
    Luckstomper- that is really cool that you got accepted to a private school. What is the difference between a private school and a regular school? As you can guess, there aren’t any private schools around here.
    Jindo, I understand. My school is crazy. In my language arts class I’m working on my third big project this month. Our teacher assigns us so many of these and gives us only a few days to complete it. This time it’s an essay. I have to write three drafts, and each one has to be significantly different or else my grade is marked down. I only have three days to finish it and it just got assigned today. And still I sit here on this blog doing nothing
    Your Language Arts class sounds nuts! 3drafts,significantly different……woah. I have a lotta school stuff too, and I sit here too, doing nothing.
    How’s life going for all the bloggers? I agree, the blog’s been pretty slow. When do all of you have spring break? Just realized mine’s at the end of April. Bah.
