BOOK NAME: Soul Surfer
AUTHOR: Bethany Hamilton

You may be familiar with Bethany Hamilton, a surfer who lost her arm to a shark. Check out her book, Soul Surfer, a memoir of this tragedy in her life. The book shows that with strength and faith, one can always overcome challenges.

Bethany Hamilton was a 13 year old girl living on the island of Hawaii. Since childhood she had been practicing the sport she and her family loved most – surfing. Little did she know how one calm Halloween morning would change her life forever. She was surfing gentle waves at dawn that day when she felt the tug on her arm. She realized that her left arm had been bitten by a shark and she was rushed to the hospital. Her family was in a panic, but Bethany kept her faith in God and got through the surgery. Bethany soon recovered and got back to her normal life. She exercised, never gave up, and showed that the loss of one arm would not prevent her from getting back to the waves. Bethany is thankful to God for helping her out through this tragedy.

This is a very inspiring read for kids in middle-school. Since the story is written by Bethany herself, just one year after the attack, feelings and events are very accurate. Also, the book has quite some pages with photos which bring to life Bethany’s passion for surfing and her accident. It is remarkable how Bethany fulfills her childhood dream in spite of a horrific incident.

    Hi, I loved that movie!!!! I can’t believe that she didn’t even scream. I admire her! If it wasn’t for God in her life she obably wouldn’t have been able to do it on her own!!!!!!!!!!!
    Love that movie it’s my favorite:)

    I was always so interested in this story, so once I tried watching the movie. But in the middle of the movie I got too scared, so I stopped watching it. I will definitely check out the book, though! It is probably less scary.

    OMG!!! Best book EVER!!! Bethany is such an inspiration, and this book is all about my favorite sport: SURFING!!!!

    i have’t read the book but all my friends say it is really good so i might read it in a little

    the movie really struck me all of her faith in God is great the bloody part was a little gross though
    i’m NOT a clean freak though

    I wasn’t really in to surfing, but I got this book for my birthday. I read it, and it is actually a GREAT book! I got this book with pics of lots of stuff, which was cool. It even has a pic of the real shark they caught after the accident. They could tell cause it’s jaws matched her scars perfectly.

    I LOVE this movie I’ve never read the book but, the movie man, it ROCKS i promise you could probly rent it at the movie store for only like 1$ you should really watch it we made a funny word for her arm gone it’s called a “Nub” it’s funny Im not tring to be mean. it’s amazing and all how she can surf with one arm did you know that it’s a real story? and Carrie Underwood is in it. You should really give it a try if you do I’ll read your book. If you agree put “im in” at the bottom of this.

    you know it’s kinda funny that you said middle schoolers would enjoy this book im 8 and in second grade and love the movie!!!!! :p and I bet I’ll LOVE the book if you agree to my challenge!!!!!! and if you don’t I’ll read it anyways!!! x)

    I just saw that movie and I didn’t even realize that there was a book. I can’t believe that it was actually written by Bethany. It really goes to show that faith, whatever you believe in, can get you through anything. Her strength is really inspirational.

    Really inspiring!!! i first heard about her a few years ago in a magazine called New Moon for girls. The quote they featured for her was:

    “Courage doesn’t mean you don’t get afraid. Courage means you don’t let fear stop you.”

    So true.

    I saw the movie and i LOVED it. sometimes i think that the book is better than the movie because of the detail. At first, I was scared to watch the movie, but then my sister talked me into watching it. I watched once and then I fell in love with it. when i was watching the movie, if it were a water scene, i would always put a pillow in front of my face, afraid to her arm. I LOVE this book!!!!!

    I saw thw movie, but I think the book and the movie are much different. I think the book is better
