Oogy

BOOK NAME: Oogy
AUTHOR: Larry Levin

Oogy, by Larry Levin, is a true book about the author’s special dog. The moral of this story is that
be it animal or person, looks don’t account for love.

Oogy, a bait dog used in dog fights, loses his ear and suffers life threatening injuries in one of
the fights. He is brought to an animal hospital and is surgically treated even though his chances of
survival are very minimal. However, Oogy slowly recovers, and is adopted by Larry Levin and his family.
They love having Oogy as a pet. Passersby fear Oogy because of his distorted face, but after seeing his
playful self, they fall in love with him. For the Levin family, Oogy becomes the fifth member of the family
because he needs more care and because he is very affectionate. The Levin family and Oogy have a
loving and protective mutual relationship.

I would recommend Oogy for kids of all ages. The author really brings out his dog, Oogy, as a
symbol of hope. I like how the part about the surgery process is very descriptive, yet not gruesome and
disgusting. Also, there are many pictures at the end of the book, which help readers visualize and
connect to the different scenes. Oogy is an interesting book in which readers will experience the
different emotions and feel pity, happiness, joy, and comfort. This book really brings out the
phrase “dogs are a man’s best friend”.

It’s also very sad, because many dogs or other animals that have been used for fighting have to be put down because they can severely harm humans if someone adopted them. But I’m glad Oogy got a second chance- plus a loving home! :)

There’s a show that I watch on Animal Planet that is about this animal rescue league that saves neglected and abused animals in Houston, Texas. This book reminds me of the times when they find a starved, diseased, or hurt animal, and after all their suffering, they find a loving home. :) Oogy the pit bull sounds so sweet.

What is there not to love from a severely abused pit bull??? It makes me so sad when these cruel people think that it’s OK to send these animals into mortal combat- most of the time, once they are found and put into a shelter, they have to be put down because they have been BRED to be aggressive, to other animals and humans alike. Their owners breed them to be as aggressive as possible, and feed them drugs to make them even more so. This makes me really angry when these senseless and cruel people do something like that to an animal. They share this earth with us- why not treat them like so?? But I am happy that Oogy found a good home, and got to tell his story through his owner. :)

Thats so sad. I know someone who had a dog, and he’s scared of other dogs. His owners thinks it was because he was also forced to fight. I hate puppy mills and illegeal puppy fighting. I have to dogs of my own, Bear and Coco. Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers. They are adorable (and mutts, not purebreds)!! I love dogs!!
