During this year’s expedition, the Hands-On Explorer Challenge team spent some time hanging out with the Zooniacs. We took an amazing hike together in Glacier National Park and also had a great time at the Whitefish Mountain Resort, where we met Jack Hanna!

Listen to the Zooniacs interviewing the expedition members on the Big Valley Radio website.

    Gecko: Its a local Montana radio station for kids (and adults alike) interested in the world.

    Zooniacs: Thanks! Your state is beautiful and I would take any opportunity to make it back there :)

    The new NG Kids magazine says the next HOEC will be posted soon! They also have the Montana trip article. On the Weird but True page I got ketchup on watermelon, and I don’t even like ketchup. :/

    ha. I CAN”T WAIT! I’M SOOOO ENTERING. FOR THE FIRST TIME I GET TO ENTER! YAY

  9. CloudedLeopard1
    October 16, 2012, 6:25 pm

    I really want to enter, but there are probably 1 in 100 chance that I’ll make it. But still, it would be really fun! I wonder where the next trip is?

  10. geckoexplorer
    October 16, 2012, 6:26 pm

    @Little Dragonfire
    Same with me. :D This will actually be my first time entering, even though I’ve known about the contest for a year. It will also be the last, since I am 13. So even though NGK has chosen the destination, here is where I would most want to go:

    -Yukon
    -Madagascar
    -Egypt
    -Brazil

    I can’t decide which I like the most. And so far I’ve written 3 good essays, now I just have to chose the best one and most related to the topic (when I know it). And as for the camera, I can pretty easily predict which one it will be. The Cayman Islands trip was a Nikon D3100, so it might be the D5100, it’s replacement. Or it could be the Canon Rebel T4i, the T3i’s replacement, from the Montana trip. Both are really good cameras. :) And Dragonfire, you should upload more pictures to Myshot, your HOEC pic too when you chose one.

    @gecko
    I will upload more pictures. You’re sooo lucky, I have like a million ideas on an essay but cant decide how to put it all together! Sweet! those cameras are really cool. Which camera are you hoping they’ll have?

  12. Little Dragonfire
    October 18, 2012, 3:46 pm

    @Clouded Leopard
    You should try. 1 out of 100 chances is still a chance right?

  13. geckoexplorer
    October 18, 2012, 9:06 pm

    @Little Dragonfire

    I’ve narrowed it down to two now… I’m thinking if it’s for Madagascar I’ll do the one about me hiking up a waterfall, if it’s somewhere like the Yukon, I’ll do the one about me climbing a mountain. Which place do you hope it is?
    And I would chose the T4i, because it’s definitely the better camera.
    I think the chances for blog members who want to win more then anything is pretty high. :) One of the past blog members who really wanted to win last year won the contest on their first try.
    You probably will have multiple chances, depending on your age… how old are you? Unfortunately for me I have only one try, so I’m really trying my best on this.

    @Gecko

    The one about you hiking the waterfall sounds cool. I’m hoping the location will be somewhere like the eastern part of Canada. I’ve been in the western part and it was soooooo amazing! If you ever get to go to Yukon territory, you must go. It’s amazing. So pretty! You’ll take a lot of pics. I’m hoping to win this year’s HOEC contest. I’m 12 so I’ll have another chance. Just two chances. Good Luck to you! What kind of camera do you have now?

    @Little Dragonfire
    I currently have an X500 (it’s a superzoom, not SLR) and it basically just a cheap camera with a big lens. I bought it when I was just starting photography about two years ago. Right now it’s not working and it won’t save any pics to the card. I’ll try formatting it and see if that works. And what I think they would more likely do than the Yukon territory is Alaska. It would be cheaper since it’s not international.

    They probably are, but they’re just making it harder for themselves. Since they’re already late, they’ll have to extend the deadline, which just gives them less time to pick the winners.

  25. geckoexplorer
    October 25, 2012, 1:03 pm

    @Little Dragonfire
    You can either write it on an index card or do it online. They will post the rules soon, but just type it for now. Anyway, I’m really tired of this post. Whenever I see it I keep saying to myself “Oh joy, they met the Zooniacs!” Come on, I’ve waited for this thing for a year, can’t they hurry up a little? :/

    thx! but how do you fit an essay on an index card.

  27. geckoexplorer
    October 28, 2012, 7:48 am

    @Little Dragonfire
    Well it’s supposed to be under 300 words, so it should fit. And the want you to write normal size and neat, so it would probably be easier to type it.

  28. geckoexplorer
    October 29, 2012, 9:32 am

    @Little Dragonfire
    I was wrong, you don’t have to fit it on one. You can write the essay on any peice of paper. Then fill out the PDF form online and print it, or copy it on an index card. So no matter what you have to do it on paper and then mail it. :)

    Hey guys, here’s some encouragement. About 1,000 kids will enter, 15 will win. So statistically there’s a 1 in 20 chance. I estamate about 50% of kids don’t follow the tricky guidelines making it 1 in 10. Of those, probably less than half try really hard to win, making it 1 in 4. And of those probably half want to win more than anything in life. That’s us. So if we are trying our best to write an essay that they are looking for, I say we have a 50% chance of winning. So does that encourage you a little bit? After you write your essays, ask your family members which they like the most. But you have the final word. Study past winning essays, and see what the judges want. Show a true love for exploring and base it on the guideline subject. If we do all that, chances are all of us will win.

    I can say right now there probably won’t be a contest this year. Of course I may be wrong, but last time this happened there was no contest. But, chances are if there is no contest this year, the next contest will be for 15 year olds too. That is what happened in 2010. But technically the contest could be any date, even though every other one started in July-September.
