Dogs and Cats Can Fly!

They can fly on a new airline just for pets that launched this month called Pet Airways. The planes' interior cabins are appointed with pet carriers instead of seats, and the pets are checked on regularly by flight attendants. Airports offering service on Pet Airways even have pre-flight lounges for dogs and cats to wait in.

Photo: The staring line of the Surf Dog ContestSurf Dog is one lucky stuffed dog! He's been all over the world, meeting new friends and exploring new places. Surf Dog began his latest journey, a road trip from San Diego, California to Seattle, Washington, in June. Surf Dog kicked off his travels by visiting a surfing dog competition in San Diego.

Rex Dubiel, a third-grade teacher from Hawaii, created Surf Dog as a fun way to raise her students' geography awareness. When Dubiel and Surf Dog travel, Dubiel posts pictures of Surf Dog and commentary on the places they have visited.

Glowing Animals Gallery

What makes animals glow? Some of them, like jellyfishes and scorpions, glow under ultraviolet lights because of naturally occurring proteins or other materials. Other animals, such as monkeys or puppies, glow because scientists have added new proteins into their DNA. The glowing mice in the photo above received DNA with the glowing protein from their father.

Helping Dogs and Cats in Need

Photo: Mimi with bags of kibbleMimi Ausland, 12, really loves animals! After visiting a website that donates rice to hungry people, she was inspired to create a similar website to help dogs and cats in animal shelters. When visitors answer a trivia question on Freekibble.com or Freekibblekat.com, they donate 10 pieces of kibble to Mimi's project. Mimi's sites have been a huge hit, and she has been featured in several articles both online and in print.

Mimi is passionate about her work collecting food for shelter animals. "I love helping animals because of how they cannot speak for themselves and people have to speak for them. I also love being able to help them get good healthy food and actually delivering the food myself to our local shelter--and I really like making other people aware that they need our help," she says.

Dogs Can Get Jealous

If you own a dog, you probably know how smart they can be, but a new study suggests that dogs can feel envy. In the study, dogs were asked to perform tricks in front of another dog that they knew, such as a playmate or a pet from the same house. The other dog would then be asked to perform the same trick. One dog would then receive a reward while the other did not.

"If both of them didn't get a reward, they continued working more or less," said lead author Friederike Range of the University of Vienna, Austria. "But if one of them didn't get food, the one that didn't get food just said, No."
