Scat

BOOK NAME: Scat
AUTHOR: Carl Hiaason

SCAT book coverThis story is about Nick and Marta who go to school in Florida. Their teacher Mrs. Starch is a mean and weird teacher who you don't want to mess around with. After the disappearance of Mrs. Starch on their field trip to Black Vine Swamp things start to get spooky. First this kid named Smoke has a bad reputation with Mrs. Starch so they think he has something to do with her disappearance. Second, Nick and Marta go take a look around her house and another intruder drags them to his car and brings them back home. And lastly, a panther has been spotted at Black Vine Swamp.

This is one of the many books written by Carl Hiaason. He seems to like writing stories in Florida. I liked the book but half the time I was reading I was scared and had to turn on my closet lights or go under my covers. You will enjoy reading this because it has a lot of surprises. The point of view keeps on changing so you will have to keep up.

This book's genres are mystery and fiction. If you like this book then you can read some of his others like "Hoot" (which is also a movie), and "Flushed."

Keep on reading!

The Book of One Hundred Truths

BOOK NAME: The Book of One Hundred Truths
AUTHOR: Julie Schumacher

The Book of One Hundred TruthsThea spends six weeks every year at her Grandma's beach house, but this year is different. She spends most of the time there either babysitting her nosy 7-year-old cousin, or writing in the Book of Truths that her mom gave to her. The thing about Theadora Grumman is that she is a liar. Because she's such a liar, Thea's mom is making her write a book with 100 true things, like the story that when she was at Three-Mile Creek and her friend almost fell through the ice and died, and the truth that she doesn't even have very many friends.

Thea's cousin is always trying to find out what Thea's writing in her book. She is bugging Thea like crazy, but what is also bugging her is that something is going on with her aunts.  They're acting very secretive and suspicious and they won't tell anyone what they are up to so it's up to Thea to find out why.
This was definitely a book I would read over again! I like how the author really made it a fictional mystery and exciting all at the same time. I could never put it down!   really hope that the author has other books of hers that I can read. I hope you find it somewhere because you don't want to miss out on a great read.

One problem is that IT hypnotizes Charles Wallace while trying to save their dad so Meg has to save her brother AND her dad before IT has already taken over the world. They get help from octopus-like friends from another planet.  Meg finally believes in herself and stands up to IT. She defeats IT, save Charles Wallace and her dad and goes back home to her family.

This book is one of the most confusing books that I have read for the blog! This book was a one that I had to read for a Parent-Choice book project at my school. I struggled reading it at parts because it kept on carrying on about every little thing. This is definitely a book for good readers who are up for a hard challenge and who like Fantasies and Mysteries!

Have you ever read a book that you thought was confusing and you almost gave up on it?  Which book was it?

Double Identity

BOOK NAME: Double Identity
AUTHOR: Margaret Peterson-Haddix

Double Identity Book Cover    This book had me on the edge of my seat the entire time I was reading it. It's a mystery that has lots of secrets. Bethany is the main character of the book. She is a normal 13 year old with a normal life until one night her parents drive her to another state to stay with an aunt and cousin she never knew she had. Her parents made sure she was OK, and left. She wouldn't see them again for several months.

Her dad calls every so often to check on Bethany and talk to her aunt. He seems to be running away from somebody, but Bethany doesn't know who. While she is staying with her aunt, some strange things happen. The people from the town act very weird as if they have seen a ghost. She gets a package containing lots of money and four different birth certificates. She also finds a bunch of home videos of her mom and dad and a little girl who looks exactly like her, but was born several years earlier. And then, her aunt and cousin tell her who she really is.

The reason that her parents have left her is that she must be protected at all costs. The people looking for her would surely find her if she had stayed with them. Once the secrets come out, she realizes there is no one in the world like her.

There are lots of secrets and twists in this book.  It is really fun to piece together the details of this book and see if you can guess the real story of Bethany...if that is her real name!

Dragon Rider

BOOK NAME: Dragon Rider
AUTHOR: Cornelia Funke

dragon rider cover image

This is my favorite book of all time so far in my life.  As you might guess from the title, this book follows a dragon named Firedrake, Ben the dragon rider and Sorrel, who is a cat-like creature (called a "brownie") that can talk with both humans and dragons, on a mission to save their kind.

The adventure starts in the Mythical Valley of Dragons.  A rat comes to warn the dragons that humans are coming to flood the valley.  Sorrel and Firedrake must go to New York City to find a map that will safely lead them to their destination.  In New York, they meet Ben who is an orphan boy living in an old warehouse along the river.  They meet Ben by using his warehouse for a rest place for a day.  Ben convinces Sorrel to let him go along on their mission.

They have all kinds of problems along the way.  They land in Europe and come across Nettlebrand, a dragon hunter.  Then the chase begins.  Ben, Firedrake and Sorrel now not only have to complete their dangerous journey, they have to defeat Nettlebrand as well.  They will need all of the tools and tricks they have plus help from a few others along the way.

This book is full of adventure, mystery and learning to find out who you are as a creature and what you find valuable.  I think anybody who likes adventure, especially if you have ever wondered what it would be like to ride on the back of dragon in the light of the moon should read this book.

The Case of the Perfect Prank

BOOK NAME: The Case of the Perfect Prank: A Jigsaw Jones Mystery
AUTHOR: James Preller

prank.jpg

Jigsaw Jones is a kid detective. He is in second grade and he solves mysteries. He has older twin brothers and a friend named Joey who will eat anything, even ants and worms.

There are at least 23 books about Jigsaw and his mysteries. I've read two of them. This book is #23. In it, Jigsaw fools his friend Mila with a whoopee cushion, so she wants to get even. So Mila and her friend, Danika, ask Jigsaw to look for Danika's lost cat. They tell him that the cat was cat-napped, but really Danika doesn't even have a cat. That's the perfect prank!

Jigsaw gathers clues at the pet store, from Danika and from his older sister to solve the mystery. I won't tell you anymore because I don't want to give it all away. I like the book a lot because the prank is pretty hard to figure out, but Jigsaw is really smart and he finds out what happened. My favorite part of the book is the two last chapters when Jigsaw puts the pieces together. I give this book a four out of five because I've never read a book that's five out of five.
