Hoot

BOOK NAME: Hoot
AUTHOR: Carl Hiaasen

Hoot book coverI just finished the book Hoot. It's by Carl Hiaasen. It is one of the best books I have read this year. It's about a middle-school kid named Roy. He is the "new kid" at school, so the bully, Dana, picks on him all the time. One day on the bus, Dana digs his fingers into Roy's temples and makes him look out of the window. Roy sees a tan, blond-haired kid running past the bus stop who is not wearing any shoes. Roy wonders why he is not getting on the school bus.

When Roy sees the same kid the next day, he runs off the bus to chase him. While he's trying to catch the kid, Roy knocks down a girl named Beatrice who is the running kid's stepsister. The running kid has found out that there is going to be a pancake house in an empty lot where there are owl dens. He has many different ways to keep the owls from being bulldozed. The pancake company says that there are no owls and that they are wild chickens, how bizarre! Though those "wild chickens" definitely look like owls.

So Roy gets involved with the running kid, whose nickname is "Mullet Fingers" and his owl plan. "Mullet Fingers" plan is to try and save the owls. He even gets poisonous snakes involved! If you want to know how, read the story. "Mullet Fingers" is called that because he can catch a mullet (a type of very fast fish) with just his bare hands. Roy also has to deal with Dana and he finds out things about Beatrice's life. Dana tries to strangle Roy, punch him and kick him, but things turn out good for Roy (Read the book!!!). Beatrice's stepmom is really mean to Beatrice. She yells at her all the time and doesn't care for her. "Mullet Fingers" doesn't even live with his mom; He ran away and never came back.

I loved this book! I liked how Roy actually cared about the owls instead of just doing nothing. I also liked how the author didn't just pay attention to the owls. He made chapters just about Roy, too. I would recommend this book. I think anybody would like it because it's not just about a girl or just about a guy. It's about a girl and a guy, and owls.

I'm reading this book again and I have a slight feeling of dejavu. Dejavu means you've done this before. Dejave means you've done this before. ;)

Guess what i luuuuuuv that book!!! i also love horses!

This was the greatest book! I liked how it was kind of environmentalist, but didn't really focus on that point. This book was definitely better than the movie. Hey, spock9: your comment was pretty funny.

i read the book but to me it was to long and need to get right to the piont.i just could not get into it

I read a little bit of it but I just couldn't get interested.

I read this book a few years ago and at the time I thought of it as the BEST book ever!!! But now that I've read even more books I can barely remember it.

omigosh! I have read HOOT book & it is SUCH a good book! If you like the book then check out FLUSH. It is by the same author & is halarious!

I'm reading Scat by the same author. I'm only on the 5th page but it seems like a good book.

This book is a magnificent adventure about the power of one child and friendship. It test how far anyone would go to save a dying species, and how good of friendships we should have.

For what age group is this?

This a good book! I reccomend this author. I think this is a book with depth and thought:(

the owls seem cute in my imagination

I've heard good things about this book and I'm going to read it as soon as I can get my hands on it!

read it and LOVED IT!!!!! my teacher actually had to tell me repeatedly to put it down.:):) great book, Carl Hiaasen is definitly one of my favorite authors!

Yes, the reviews on the first page of the book are right, the one review that I liked was "It Truly is a Hoot". That review was right. The book is great! Hoot is all about saving animals and in this case it's saving owls. (I know it's kind of oblivious) Anyway it's a truly amazing book- read it today!

This is a great book!

This book was pretty good.It had some bad words in it though.Ages 11+.

Ok, just pointing out that my last comment sounded rather unintelligent: a hah hah dat was pretty fahnny!

Also, spock9: you can't remember if you've read it, but you thought it was good??

The movie rocks. The guy who was Roy in the movie will be Percy Jackson in the Percy Jackson movie coming out in February 2010.

Hoot 4ever!!!!!!!
