"Hope is the thing with feathers" was Frannie's favorite poem. Frannie is a twelve-year-old girl who lives during the time of segregation. She was born in an African-American family and has a brother who is deaf. At school she is bullied by two boys named RayRay and Trevor, and there's some new kid from the white side of town moves into the town and now goes to their school. To make matters worse Frannie's mom has been acting a little weird when she finds out that she's pregnant. The story is all about how Frannie struggles through tough times in and out of her private life.
I would give this book 3 out of 5. It was pretty hard understanding at parts but by the end it got easier. It's kind of an interesting topic in a sort of way that it's not the usual thing that you see sometimes in books. It is definitely not the kind of book that has action in every chapter, but it's more about what's going on around the characters. I was glad to see that it was a short read just because I needed to take a break from those heavier books.
Post in the comments if you have ever felt strange at a new school or felt left out and can relate to Frannie.

this doesn't sound like a good book to me because I like funny books and books with alot of action.
oh my friend read this book! i want to read it too now! i can definitely relate to frannie because i feel left out sometimes. really, who hasn't felt left out at one time or another?
What age level do you think it is?
You should read seekers the quest begins by erin hunter-it's about three different bears from three different worlds and fate brings them together and sends them on a journey to a place they cannot imagine. The third book just came out, wich tells you it is a prety new series. It is my favorite book ever!!! TRY IT!!!!!
I kinda felt like Frannie when I moved to Washington, but I learned to make friends and eventually, I felt better being at a new school.
NO OFFENSE- but it seems pretty BORING

I've read it a while ago and I admit it's not an edge-of- your-seat kinda book.It is very true to life though. There's a reason it's been given the Newbery Honor Award.
Sounds really good.I have felt like Frannie when i started middle school. I new all my friends from elementry(it was a small school with one class per grade)but when i started middle school it was really diffrent new kids, bigger school, and 2classes for each grade. However i am starting my second year there(7th grade) and now my way around and have lots of friends! Type soon-Claire

This book sounds like my kind of book. I sounds sort of odd and confuzing, but it really does sound like my kind of book.
a couple of my friends from AGP(academically gifted program)read it and said it was good, but i still have 2 read it. but, it doesnt sound like the greatest book ever, if ya know what i mean. and the whole 3rd grade reading level thing kinda makes me not wanna read it cuz im going into 6th grade and could read above college level in 3rd grade,so idk about it.
I took this book out of my libary 3 times and still can never bring myself to read it. Is this book good or just a waste of my summer.
This book might not be for me I'm on a very high reading level. Is this book really third grade?I think I will check out The Seekers though, and maybe The Wizard of Oz.(Did you know that The Wizard of Oz
