A Message From Cocos Island

SUBJECT: A Message From Cocos Island

FROM: Enric Sala

Thank you so much for following our expedition to Cocos Island and the Las Gemelas seamounts. The whole team is thrilled to know that you're watching and reading about our work!

We've seen incredible animals here, including a whale shark, hammerhead sharks, sea turtles, marble rays, and the astonishing frogfish--which walks on the seafloor and looks like a sponge!

I wanted to reply to some of the comments and questions you had for us. (Photograph by Ford Cochran)

PurpleAnimalLUV, I agree with you completely: Sharks ARE sooo cool and are misunderstood. Go Green (and Blue), and spread the word!

Greengirl12, sharks are everywhere in the water here, from the surface to as far down as we can go in our scuba diving gear. There are hammerheads, silky sharks, silvertips, whitetips, Galapagos sharks, and the giant whale shark.

llaurent, please tell all your classmates that no, I've never been bitten by a shark. Sharks are mostly gentle and shy. Most species are more scared of us than we are of them.

Please keep watching, keep sharing your comments and questions, and remember to do all you can to learn about and care for the creatures that live in the ocean. Thank you!   - Enric

Hey it's me again and I'm OBESSED with ocean life! It's the coolest thing ever! Any show on TV witht he word ocean in it, I check out. And yes, go green and blue!

Whenever a shark attacks a human, (which happens so rarely) does it usually mistake it for a seal or dolphin that it would eat?

PS: I own a beach house and I go there quite often... I want to try scuba diving. Is it scary at first????

Thanks,
Tree Hugger =D
