Lots of National Geographic Society employees brought their kids to headquarters for "Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day" on Thursday, April 23. They spent part of their visit with National Geographic Kids! Some of these kids became reporters for the day. Here's their take on what it's like to work at National Geographic.

National Geographic is awesome because there are so many interesting things. There is a library in National Geographic and there are 35,000 books in it. Amazing, isn't it? In the library is the 1st National Geographic magazines, it looked like a book with no pictures. Also I went to the top floor; there are all sorts of maps. There is a really cool map with many colors, such as magenta, yellow, cyan and blue.
The photo lab is really cool because they make all sorts of photos that you can print out. When they are done printing it will look really cool. We saw very big printers and very cool pictures. Did you know that before they invented computers they used metal tins to print things? Some people still use them today.
Did you know who the 1st president of the National Geographic Society was? It was Gardiner Greene Hubbard.

The National Geographic Society is amazing because of all the important things they have. An example is the National Geographic library, which has books with the very old magazine articles from 1888. Another important fact is there are 35,000 books in the library. Another amazing fact is that Alexander Graham Bell was one of the presidents of the National Geographic Society.
At the top of the building is where the cartographers are making their maps. There are maps of all types. An example is the Relief Map, which shows valleys, mountains, rivers, etc. To make a map you make the background and add the colors, magenta, yellow, black and cyan.
In the basement is where they print the pictures and words for the magazine. A long time ago before there were computers they would use copper stamps to write and print pictures. To print pictures you go into the dark room. They have a dark room so the light does not mess up the pictures.
There are many more things at National Geographic that I haven't seen yet, and I hope I will soon learn about.

Lynn Addison
Lynn Addison is a Senior Editor for Features. Addison's favorite thing is to edit Feature stories. She has to make sure that all of everything is correct, tells the truth, it fits, and make sure the reader understands it. When she gets to work she makes sure what kind of stories she has to edit, or see if she has any phone calls, email, and she has to send budges. She wanted to be a ballet dancer when she was 16. In college she wanted to publish and her dream came true. If she made a mistake she has to learn from it. (Everybody makes mistakes.) Addison says find a job that you love so you won't get tired of it. Addison has two jobs being a mother and working at NGS she tries to make enough room to balance it and don't cut any corners. She thinks communicating each other better and often. She edits 7,500 pages 25 years. Based on 300 pages a year. Addison has traveled in 1986 she went to the Arctic Ocean she landed on the ice.
Mary Lee Elden
Mary is a director of 13,000 schools in the US take part in our contest. She is excited about students learning more about the world. She has traveled to India, China and Hungary. If Mary made a mistake she has to apologize and she has to work harder so she doesn't made more mistakes. Mary was a teacher for 5 years and she found what she loved. She don't like the long hours.
Karen Gardiner
Karen Gardiner is a creative director. Favorite thing is to work with photos. She hates the long drive to work. She undoes her mistake. She has traveled to St. Louis, Missouri, New York, San Francisco, Toronto, and Orlando. She wanted to be a artist and a astronomer. She tries to sell people NGS magazines. She has 2 pets and 2 children. 9 people work for her. 7 people worked for her 4 years ago. Karen's children are in college.

I woke up in the morning expecting school but I found my mom in my room, saying "Your dad is taking you to work." And I realized that it was take your kid to work day. So I got up, put on my clothes, ate breakfast, brushed my teeth, and walked to the bus stop with my dad. We rode the bus to Silver Spring and got off. Then, we went on the metro, rode for 20 min, got off, and walked to NG. We waited for Elsa to interview my dad. They weren't coming so we went and got a scone, a drink, and went to see the kids room. Next, we went back up and my dad got inter viewed by Elsa.
After that I interviewed a naturalist named Kyler Abernathy. They we went down, got lunch, watched Sea Monsters, ate dessert, and came back up so I could write about my day. Well, nothing is happening right now so I'll write later.
I'm back but my balloon popped so I'm going to read. I didn't talk much about Kyler Abernathy. So I'm going to do that. During the interview he quoted that. He likes studying on remote islands because it feels like it's just him and the animals. Now back to what's happening now I just watched a great video of amazing shots of animals which was amazing. Then, when we got back to my dad's office we found out I won the green idea contest and got a RC skunk so we went to pick it up and I got a cupcake there. (Which I am eating now.) (Munch. Munch.)
