Ten Finalists to Compete in GeoBee

Fifty-four state-level winners matched wits in the National Geographic Bee preliminary round on Tuesday, May 22. Here are the 10 competitors that came out on top:

The winner of the National Geographic Bee will win a $25,000 college scholarship, lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society, and a trip to the Galápagos Islands. Watch them compete in the final round on Thursday, May 24, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on the National Geographic Channel and Nat Geo WILD.

Malachy Takes Top Prize at Westminster Dog Show

A four-year-old Pekingese named CH Palacegarden Malachy (or Malachy for short) won Best in Show at the 2012 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in New York City on Tuesday. This is the fourth time a Pekingese has won, but the last time a member of this breed was top dog was 22 years ago! The Pekingese breed gets its name from the Chinese capital city of Beijing, which used to be known as Peking.

Google Science Fair 2012

Today is the start of the 2012 Google Science Fair! This competition is for curious kids ages 13 to 18. If you have a great idea for a project, you can register for the fair. The grand prize winner will receive cool prizes including a National Geographic Expedition trip to the Galapagos Archipelago!

Do science experiments at home with National Geographic Kids.

The Russian team won the 10th National Geographic World Championship at Google headquarters in Mountain View, California yesterday. Russia has entered the competition every year. The Canadian team came in second place (Canada came in first last year), and Chinese Taipei came in third. The teams were awarded gold, silver, and bronze medals.

The World Championship is held every two years.

STEM Video Game Challenge Winners Announced

Twelve creative students were named the winners of the National STEM Video Game Challenge yesterday by the United States Chief Technology Officer Aneesh Chopra in Washington, D.C. The STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) challenge competition was open to students in grades 5 to 8, with a separate category available for adult developers. Kids who entered the contest submitted original video game designs that were based on STEM concepts. The Youth Prize winners were chosen from more than 500 entries.

The youth winners will receive an AMD-based laptop computer and educational software. In addition, a prize of $2,000 will be given to their school (or a non-profit organization of their choice).

A five-year-old Scottish deerhound named GCH Foxcliffe Hickory Wind (or just Hickory for short) won Best in Show at the 2011 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in New York City on Tuesday. This is the first time that a Scottish deerhound has won the top prize.

Hickory will now officially retire from dog shows and will spend her time at her owner’s farm in Virginia.

GeoBee State Finalists Announced

The 2010 National Geography Bee state competitions were held on Friday, April 9. The winners of the state GeoBees have been announced and are listed here! The finalists will travel to Washington, D.C. to compete in the finals on May 25-26 at National Geographic headquarters.

“Peeps in Places” Photo Competition

Peeps, the sugar-coated marshmallow treats shaped like bunnies and chicks, have been unwrapped and are traveling the world! National Geographic is challenging photographers to enter a photo competition to find the most creative Peeps travel photo. Be sure to sign up with your parents–kids can’t enter the contest on their own!

Sadie is Top Dog at Westminster

Sadie is a five-year-old Scottish terrier. She won the Best in Show award at the 2010 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show on February 16 in New York. The 2010 Show is the 134th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. The first show was held in 1877. The Best in Show award was first given in 1907.

Doodle 4 Google

Think big for a second. If you could do anything, what would you do? Google wants to know and is inviting K-12 students to get their creative imaginations working on what you’d do if you could do absolutely anything.

Your school must be registered by March 17 for you to be able to submit a design and all entries must be received by March 31.

The 21st National Geographic Bee Winner

Eric Yang, a 7th grader from Texas, won the 21st National Geographic Bee today. Eric received a $25,000 college scholarship and a lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society. He’ll also get a trip to the Galapagos Islands!

The second place winner was Arjun Kandaswamy, and the third place winner was Shantan Krovvidi.

GeoBee Competition Is Buzzing

The 45 National Geographic Bee finalists are gathering at the National Geographic Society headquarters today for the final competition. All of the finalists were champions in their state geography bees. The ten who come out on top after today’s questions will progress to the final round of the Bee tomorrow.

Tomorrow’s first prize winner will receive a $25,000 college scholarship and a lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society. The second prize winner will receive a $15,000 college scholarship, and the third prize winner will receive a $10,000 scholarship.

The Winner of the Great Turtle Race

The Great Turtle Race

Starting today, follow 11 leatherback turtles as they swim from Nova Scotia, Canada, across the Atlantic Ocean to the Caribbean in the Great Turtle Race. Eleven different turtles are competing in the race. The first turtle to cross the finish line and enter the Caribbean wins!

2009 Iditarod Winner

The 2009 Iditarod winner has made it to Nome, Alaska! Musher Lance Mackey arrived at 11:38 a.m. on March 18, winning his third Iditarod race in a row!

The Iditarod Sled Dog Race takes place every March in Alaska. The race is an incredible 1,150 miles (1,851 kilometers) long, and it usually takes at least 10 days for the first musher to make it to the finish line.
